Khadijah, daughter of Khoulid
Among the traders of Mecca was a well-respected, honorable, refined, wealthy forty-year old widowed lady named Khadijah. She was very beautiful and had many suitors, however, she declined their offers of marriage.

Abu Talib suggested to his nephew, who was now twenty-five, that he might wish to contact Khadijah to ask whether she might like him to trade on her behalf. Muhammad, having dealt only with male traders, was somewhat respectfully shy to ask her, so he told his uncle that perhaps she would send someone to contact him if she needed his services.

When news of the conversation reached Khadijah, she told those close to her that if she had only known he was willing to trade with her wealth she would have offered him the opportunity long before, and so a messenger was sent to invite him to come to her house and discuss arrangements.

When Khadijah met Muhammad she respectfully asked if he would take it upon himself to act on her behalf with her merchandise. She told him that she had already learned of his reputation for honesty and truthfulness and knew of his high morality. Muhammad agreed and as a mark of appreciation she told him she would gift him with twice the usual amount. Muhammad accepted, thanked Khadijah for her generosity, and returned to his uncle to tell him the good news. His uncle was delighted and told him Allah had sent him this blessing.

Just before the end of the month of Dhul Hijjah, Muhammad, in the company of Khadijah's devoted servant Maysarah, set out for Syria on his first trip. Upon reaching a place called Tayma, Muhammad and Maysarah sat down to rest under the shade of a tree not far from the hermitage of a monk named Nastura, who surprisingly rushed out to greet him.

After the exchange of greetings, Nastura kissed Muhammad's head and feet then said, "I believe you, and bear witness that you are the one Allah mentioned in the Torah." When Nastura saw the mark between his shoulders, he kissed him yet again and bore witness that Muhammad was to become none other than the Messenger of Allah, the illiterate prophet of whom Prophet Jesus, peace be upon him, had prophesied would come. Then, he turned to Maysarah and told him, "He is the last Prophet, I wish I could be with him when he is called!" Maysarah was taken aback by Nastura's statement, it was indeed something to tell his mistress.

After taking their farewells Muhammad and Maysarah continued on their way to Basra and as the heat of the mid-day sun blazed down, Maysarah noticed clouds casting their continuous, protective shade over his companion.

When they reached their destination Muhammad concluded his commerce and wasted no time setting off back to Mecca. Many days passed before they reached the familiar outskirts of Mecca then at long last, they finally reached Khadijah's house around mid-day. .. a click away

About the Author

Jonathan Berk is the A.P. Giannini Professor of Finance at the Graduate School of Business, Stanford University and is a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. Before coming to Stanford, he was the Sylvan Coleman Professor of Finance at Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley. Prior to earning his Ph.D., he worked as an Associate at Goldman Sachs (where his education in finance really began).

Professor Berk’s research interests in finance include corporate valuation, capital structure, mutual funds, asset pricing, experimental economics, and labor economics. His work has won a number of research awards including the TIAA-CREF Paul A. Samuelson Award, the Smith Breeden Prize, Best Paper of the Year in The Review of Financial Studies, and the FAME Research Prize. His paper, “A Critique of Size-Related Anomalies,” was selected as one of the two best papers ever published in The Review of Financial Studies. In recognition of his influence on the practice of finance he has received the Bernstein-Fabozzi/Jacobs Levy Award, the Graham and Dodd Award of Excellence, and the Roger F. Murray Prize.

He served as Associate Editor of the Journal of Finance, Director of the Western Finance Association, Academic Director of the Financial Management Association, is a Fellow of the Financial Management Association, and is a member of the advisory board of the Journal of Portfolio Management.

Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, Professor Berk is married, with two daughters, and is an avid skier and biker.

Peter DeMarzo is the Mizuho Financial Group Professor of Finance and current Vice President of the American Finance Association. He is also a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. He currently teaches MBA and Ph.D. courses in Corporate Finance and Financial Modeling. In addition to his experience at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, Professor DeMarzo has taught at the Haas School of Business and the Kellogg Graduate School of Management, and he was a National Fellow at the Hoover Institution.

Professor DeMarzo received the Sloan Teaching Excellence Award at Stanford, and the Earl F. Cheit Outstanding Teaching Award at U.C. Berkeley.

Professor DeMarzo has served as an Associate Editor for The Review of Financial Studies, Financial Management, and the B.E. Journals in Economic Analysis and Policy, as well as a Director of the American Finance Association. He has served as Vice President and President of the Western Finance Association. Professor DeMarzo’s research is in the area of corporate finance, asset securitization, and contracting, as well as market structure and regulation. His recent work has examined issues of the optimal design of contracts and securities, and the influence of information asymmetries on stock prices and corporate investment. He has received numerous awards including the Western Finance Association Corporate Finance Award and the Barclays Global Investors/Michael Brennan best-paper award from The Review of Financial Studies.

Professor DeMarzo was born in Whitestone, New York, and is married with three boys.

About the Author
Growing up in Chicago at a time when neighbourhoods were going through transitions in ethnic and racial composition, Richard T. Schaefer found himself increasingly intrigued by what was happening, how people were reacting, and how these changes were affecting neighbourhoods and people’s jobs. His interest in social issues caused him to gravitate to sociology courses at Northwestern University, where he eventually received a BA in sociology.“Originally as an undergraduate I thought I would go on to law school and become a lawyer. But after taking a few sociology courses, I found myself wanting to learn more about what sociologists studied, and fascinated by the kinds of questions they raised.” This fascination led him to obtain his MA and PhD in sociology from the University of Chicago. Dr. Schaefer’s continuing interest in race relations led him to write his master’s thesis on the membership of the Ku Klux Klan and his doctoral thesis on racial prejudice and race relations in Great Britain.Dr. Schaefer went on to become a professor of sociology and now teaches at DePaul University in Chicago. In 2004 he was named to the Vincent DePaul professorship in recognition of his undergraduate teaching and scholarship. He has taught introductory sociology for over 35 years to students in colleges, adult education programs, nursing programs, and even a maximum-security prison. Dr. Schaefer’s love of teaching is apparent in his interaction with his students. “I find myself constantly learning from the students who are in my classes and from reading what they write. Their insights into the material we read or current events that we discuss often become part of future course material and sometimes even find their way into my writing.”Dr. Schaefer is author of the eleventh edition of Sociology (McGraw-Hill, 2008) and of the fourth edition of Sociology Matters (McGraw-Hill, 2009). He is also the author of Racial and Ethnic Groups, now in its eleventh edition, and Race and Ethnicity in the United States, fifth edition. Together with William Zellner, he co-authored the eighth edition of Extraordinary Groups, published by Worth in 2007. Dr. Schaefer served as the general editor of the three-volume Encyclopedia of Race, Ethnicity, and Society, published by Sage in 2008. His articles and book reviews have appeared in many journals, including American Journal of Sociology, Phylon: A Review of Race and Culture, Contemporary Sociology, Sociology and Social Research, Sociological Quarterly, and Teaching Sociology. He served as president of the Midwest SociologicalSociety in 1994–1995.Dr. Schaefer’s advice to students is to “look at the material and make connections to your own life and experiences. Sociology will make you a more attentive observer of how people in groups interact and function. It will also make you more aware of people’s different needs and interests―and perhaps more ready to work for the common good, while still recognizing the individuality of each person.”

Received in good condition; wrapped well.

Seller sent it in a reasonable time & it was wrapped well. As for the actual contents of the book (Sociology), I haven't really read it-just skimmed it to get an idea of what the layout of the book is like. Thankfully, it's an online class & I don't have homework every night to do (just prep for tests every Thursday, "open book, of course," according to our instructor, lol!). I do think this will be an interesting subject (I like Psych & I did take Sociology in high school; plus, I do wonder why people are the way they are, & maybe this course will give me answers).

I am reading this book as required for class & I am finding this book to be highly informative! I am finding certain aspects of sociology that are fitting to myself & others I know. Even if a person is not in a Sociology class & is looking for something educational to read (yes, people read sociology & psych books for fun!), this is a book I would highly recommend!

Easy to understand, shows real world application of theories

Had to purchase this book for a class, appreciated that it was pretty easy to read and there was consistent examples of real-world situations and applications that went a long way towards understanding the concepts and theories presented. On a personal note, the attitude of the author/contributor about some specific topics came through loud and clear and I found that very annoying, mainly because I had an opposing view, but also because this is a textbook and I don't feel the author's personal opinion should factor in. Overall, it was a useful tool and I got a lot out of it.

Roger Lancelyn Green (1918-1987) became interested in myths and legends at an early age. Frequently absent from school due to illness, he spent his time browsing through the books of the magnificent Queen Anne library at his home in England. He loved fairy tales, adventure stories, and traditional legends from around the world. While at Oxford he made a special study of fairy tales and myths. He published a large number of books, but it is his skill as a master storyteller that gives the tales their freshness alongside their familiarity.

Ed Lewis is an experienced and well-known mathematics education author and consultant who teaches at Australian Catholic University. He is an advocate of quality maths programmes that provide practical, stimulating and thought-provoking activities for children and has written many titles and series that support teachers in realizing this mission.

Wonderful rendering by a true master of literature

Roger Lancelyn Green was a true expert of classic literature and ancient mythology. Green was also good friends with C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Lewis's stepson Douglas Gresham (who recently co-produced the Disney production of THE LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE). So, Roger Lancelyn Green ran in literary circles.

Furthermore, Roger Lancelyn Green thoroughly studied all the ancient mythologies from around the world. He knew them inside and out. But unlike most other like-minded scholars, Green chose to bring these stories home for children. Such he has done with Norse mythology, Egyptian mythology, Robin Hood, Arthurian legend, and of course, Greek mythology.

Green's book TALES OF THE GREEK HEROES is nothing short of exciting and fun to read. It's simple enough that a child can understand it and complex enough that an adult reader will not be bored by it. In it are such exciting stories as the adventures of Perseus the Gorgon-slayer (also depicted in the 1981 film CLASH OF THE TITANS) and all the labors of Hercules (or Heracles). The book concludes with the fall of Troy, which gives way to Green's two follow-up books THE TALE OF TROY and THE LUCK OF TROY.

I also highly recommend Roger Lancelyn Green's KING ARTHUR AND HIS KNIGHTS OF THE ROUND TABLE.

Well done!

Groger Lancelyn Green retells the stories of the ancient Greek Heroes in a way that lends detail and continuity to those stories we have all heard. I had several "oh...that is how it hooks together" moments while reading.

The actual reading level is probably appropriate for a 5th-6th grader, but the style and story-telling will grasp the attention of an older reader. This book would also be a fabulous "read-aloud" for a younger audience with interest in the Greek Heroes.

Roger Green is obviously passionate about this subject and his passion shines through and grabs the reader. This is one the better books I have ever read about the ancient Greek heroes.

Can't get enough of the Greeks

My 10 year old boy can't get enough of Greek mythology. He's read all the Percy Jackson books and has organized a Greek God game at recess. This is just up his alley! He read it over a weekend (when he's not even required to read for school). Loved it! Now the 8 year old is reading it too.

Very informative good book. Detailed schematics. Has a wah pedal...sweet...good examples of compression and tremolo.
