From School Library Journal
Gr 1-3-This well-written and informative book introduces budding entomologists to the world of insects and bugs. Rockwell offers basic factual information in an interesting, easy-to-read format. Common insects are introduced, and the main differences between insects and spiders are explained as well as what makes a bug a bug. The collage illustrations are beautifully rendered with layered colored papers of a variety of textures that add both depth and details to the creatures. The honeybee looks extremely lifelike with a fuzzy body and legs, and the illustration of a multihued birdwing butterfly accurately and attractively shows it sucking nectar from a flower. An index identifies the types of insects and other bugs that are found in the book, and some projects are suggested for those interested in learning more about insects. A strong title for both school and public libraries.

From Booklist
Ages 5-8. OK, so a bug is a bug is a bug. Well, not according to this entry in the Let's-Read-and-Find-Out-Science series. Children will learn what makes a bug a bug and a beetle a beetle, and why butterflies and water striders are considered insects but spiders, daddy longlegs, and ladybugs aren't. The spare, carefully written text makes the distinction between insects and bugs quite clear, and the paper-cut illustrations don't overwhelm with tiny details. Young naturalists will also get some well-illustrated instruction on how to examine their own backyard insects and determine what they have found. The "Find Out More about Insects" section at the back offers other ideas--among them, making an insect calendar and planting a garden to attract butterflies. A key to the creatures in the illustrations (none of which are labeled) is appended, but there's still going to be some guesswork for younger children when several different insects appear on a spread. Great book but...
By geeper
After seeing this book for the first time at a museum I decided to buy it. My son also remembered it after a short viewing at the museum, so it apparently had a good impact on him too.

I love the simple yet detailed illustrations - colorful & textured cutouts of each insect with no background noise. And the text has lots of info.

Not five stars because reading it feels kind of cumbersome. With the type of info presented, it would've been more effective in a more freestyle format w/ bullet-type text instead of trying to mimic a storybook. Simple text to match the simple pictures would've been nice.

There's also an odd statement in the book that made me wonder if the editing was done overseas or something... It states- "Crickets have long back legs for jumping" and "Grasshoppers have long legs for making music". uhh...isn't this switched around? I suppose it could work either way (but has anyone actually heard it that way?)

Anyway, this book is still a pleasure to look at and well worth the purchase. It's still much better & more comprehensive then the several other bug books we saw at the museum. And very preschooler-friendly.

A must-have for elementary science teachers
By C. Castillo
I am a preschool science teacher and I have found this book to be incredibly helpful when we were learning about how living things are classified. When learning about invertebrates, this is the book to have! The language is age appropriate and the illustrations are excellent. My preschoolers love this book! They walk away with a lot of information that is easy to remember.

Review
"The media has a tremendous impact upon the people, and as they say, with great power comes great responsibility. Now in a newly updated and expanded second edition, In the News: The Practice of Media Relations in Canada is an in-depth study of the relationship between the media and the people in the nation of Canada. A scholarly and complete examination now in an updated second edition, "In the News" is an excellent read for anyone interested in the status of the media in modern society. An ideal choice for community library social issues collections focusing on Canada." Bookwatch, August 2008

"William Wray Carney, an adjunct professor at Concordia University College of Alberta, has taken his 30-plus years of experience in media, communications and teaching, and produced a highly readable, practical, and scholarly work on media relations-no mean feat. Carney divides the book into three sections, beginning with the basics, working through the nuts and bolts of media relations and ending with emerging trends in the field. In each section, the chapters contain practical information illustrated with real life examples, and the findings from scholarly research. However, as is often the case today with technology changing faster and faster, the book at times seems dated. With that said, In the News makes a valuable contribution to the media relations textbook field. Beyond students, professional communicators will find it an excellent resource. And people just interested in the media and their role in our society will find the book enlightening." Karla K. Gower, J-Source.ca, The Canadian Journalism Project, [Full review at http://j-source.ca/english_new/detail.php?id=4508]

"William Wray Carney fills a major gap in Canadian media relations with the second edition of In the News: The Practice of Media Relations in Canada. The book readily fulfills its purpose as a "standard textbook on media relations that meets academic standards, is research-based, and provides both a practical and a philosophical guide to dealing with media and reporters." This book should be required reading for individuals or members of organizations that may be involved in media relations, such as governments, non-profit organizations, universities, libraries, businesses, etc. Journalists and reporters will benefit from Carney's offering as well. The textbook is comprised of three major sections. In the first portion of the book, Carney discusses the theory and principles of media relations. The second portion of the book builds on the background provided in the first section and outlines the practice of media relations. The second section is the meat of Carney's text and is full of practical strategies and tips for successful media relations. In this section Carney covers every topic of media relations from how to create and develop news releases (including detailed specifics such as how to construct a good lead) and how to give successful interviews, to the various approaches to the media (from the news conference to media events), in an easy-to-read style. The major differences between the first edition, published in 2002, and the second edition appear to be stronger editing and the addition of a third section that discusses "Emerging trends in media and media relations" and "Towards a greater understanding of media, communications and technology." The second edition is about 30 pages longer. Carney's meticulous explanations of what media are, how they work, and what concrete steps a communicator needs to take in order to get their story out to the public or to their specific audience make this book a must-read for anyone already involved in media relations or anyone who thinks they might need to know more about communications." - Tami Oliphant, University of Western Ontario

"This book, now in its second edition, considers the media from the perspective of a PR practitioner [and] fills a need for a Canadian primer on effective media relations.I felt that Part Two was comparable to a chat with an individual who has through trial and error acquired a high level of expertise in dealing with the media. Indeed, in this section, Carney offers a much straightforward advice in a conversational tone....In the News is written in a direct, unadorned style....In terms of its utility as a course text especially, I would recommend assigning this book in a first or second year PR course. Students can then read the chapters at the rate of one or two per week, with stimulation and role-playing exercises reinforcing the lessons learned. They could then keep In the News as a useful reference, to be consulted when the need arises." Eric Spalding, PRRB, Spring 2009

This is a book designed for people in the public, private and voluntary sector who know very little about the news media but need to know more if they are going to do their jobs properly. It contains lots of practical advice about how to approach reporters, turn events into a news story, navigate difficult interviews, and write grabby press releases.
Although Carney, a former journalist and now an experienced political staffer in the premier's office in Saskatchewan,he manages to avoid casting news media as puppets to be manipulated. Instead, he urges public relations practitioners to help the news media do their job rather than hinder them. Journalists wanting to
know more about the tricks of the trade used in the PR business will also find this interesting. G.S..

Recommendation: Definitely worth owning for all but the very experienced. The two chapters on handling interviews are touchstones to be read over and over, as are the concluding thoughts on professional development. Total beginners will want to supplement this volume with additional case studies showing the principles in action and material on the how-to of activities such as setting up a news conference venue or conducting a media drop.

Theories of Democracy: A ReaderFrom Brand: Rowman Littlefield Publishers

Theories of Democracy builds on Robert Dahl's observation that there is no single theory of democracy; only theories. Beyond the broad commitment to rule by the majority, democracy involves a set of contentious debates concerning the proper function and scope of power, equality, freedom, justice, and interests. In this anthology, Ronald J. Terchek and Thomas C. Conte have brilliantly assembled the works of classical, modern, and contemporary commentators to illustrate the deep and diverse roots of the democratic ideal, as well as to provide materials for thinking about the way some contemporary theories build on different traditions of democratic theorizing. The arguments addressed in Theories of Democracy appear in the voices of authors who have championed influential theories concerning the opportunities and dangers associated with democratic politics. In this collection, Terchek and Conte have selected excerpts not as a means for promoting a particular way of looking at democracy, but rather they have wisely chosen works that will enable students to carry on an informed discourse on the meaning and purposes of democratic principles and practices. Theories of Democracy is a must for every student of democracy's past, present, and future.

Review
Democracy is not an easy idea, the practice of democracy even more difficult. Theories of Democracy is an important, sophisticated, and smart collection of readings that recalls these simple truths in instructive and often provocative ways. Moving from the origins of democratic aspirations in early liberal and republican theories, through a helpful organization of contemporary theories of democracy, to critiques that seek to extend democracy's reach, Terchek and Conte have made clear that the evolution of democracy is an ongoing project. Concise introductions to each set of readings alert the reader to the choices that we confront in trying to match our democratic hopes to political possibilities. Theories of Democracy demonstrates that democratic values surface in a wide and diverse set of political writings. It also encourages the reader to reflect upon their own position in these debates. This makes the work useful for teaching both undergraduate and graduate students. Democracy is hard work that begins with an appreciation of its complexity. That is a lesson not only for students but for all friends of democracy. (Alfonso J. Damico)

Democracy is a global catchword today--but its meaning is contested and ambivalent. This volume provides a lucid overview of major theories of democracy, including 'protective,' 'pluralist,' and 'participatory' versions, together with critical evaluations from inside and outside 'the West.' A helpful and much needed text. (Dallmayr, Fred)

Terchek and Conte have put together an excellent work, touching all the bases and then some. Their editorial work and commentary are superb. They have established a standard not just for their topic, but for anthologies in general. (Frank B. Feigert)

An ideal collection for courses on democratic theory. Terchek and Conte combine the expected selections--Rousseau, Machiavelli, Schumpeter--with an innovative list of critiques, from a variety of contemporary perspectives. Inclusions of Gandhi and other non-Western theorists is especially unusual and welcome. (Klosko, George)

Ronald Terchek and Thomas Conte's Theories of Democracy is a thoughtfully selected compilation of important statements representing competing accounts of democratic principles and aspirations. It should prove very useful for undergraduate courses in modern and contemporary democratic theory. (Thomas Spragens)

Terchek and Conte's Theories of Democracy offers a wide-ranging collection of classical and contemporary perspectives on the problems and prospects of democratic society. Its most original feature is its inclusion of non-western voices in the chorus--or perhaps the cacophony--of contemporary democratic theory and practice. (Ball, Terence)

This book would be a useful text in an introductory-level course on democratic theory. (Political Studies)

About the Author
Ronald J. Terchek is professor of government and politics at the University of Maryland, College
Park, and the author of Republican Paradoxes and Liberal Anxieties: Retrieving Neglected
Fragments of Political Theory and Gandhi: Struggling for Autonomy. Thomas C. Conte is an assistant professor at Gettysburg College.

Not convenient to work with
By A. J. Sutter
This is a review of the book viewed as a tool, rather than a review of the ideas it contains: The book was one of several I considered as a possible assigned text for an undergraduate seminar I'll be teaching. A couple of its features made me decide against it. One is the failure to identify the edition and page or section numbers of the excerpted passages. Needless to say, translators are also usually unidentified. E.g., we're presented with a number of run-together passages from Aristotle's book-length Politics, and Machiavelli's humongous Discourses, without any way of identifying where they come from, or whose translation was used. Some modern authors fare better (if you crawl through the acknowledgments at the front of the book), but even for authors like Gandhi we get chapter references but not page numbers. This makes it very tiresome for an instructor to give some context to the selections, or to supplement them with additional ones from the same source. The result is that the editors present their selections with a kind of take-our-word-for-it attitude: not very democratic, that. The other unfortunate feature is that text is physically unattractive: it appears to be digitally printed, and each page has extremely wide lines of small and difficult text. The result is exactly the sort of book I hated to read, assuming it hadn't put me to sleep, when I was in college and law school. (Truth be told, now too.) Wider margins or a two-column format would have been better. The reader edited by Blaug & Schwartzmantel is better-sourced, better-printed, and substantively more nuanced, e.g., distinguishing between participation and deliberation, which the present book does not. You might want to give that one a look first.

Myth of the Welfare Queen: A Pulitzer Prize-Winning Journalist's Portrait of Women on the Line, by David Zucchino

Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter David Zucchino spent a year sharing the lives of Odessa Williams and Cheri Honkala -- two "welfare mothers" in Philadelphia -- to gain an intimate look at their day-to-day existence. Odessa, supporting an extended family, exhibits almost superhuman strength and resolve. Cheri, a single mother, is a tireless advocate for the homeless. Zucchino beautifully portrays them as figures of profound courage and quiet perseverance, systematically shattering all misconceptions and stereotypes about these women and so many others like them.

Amazon.com Review
Welfare moms are "the most hated women in America," says Cheri Honkala, a dynamic activist from Philadelphia who is profiled in the engrossing Myth of the Welfare Queen. As the American mood toward welfare turned mean in the mid-1990s and politicians worked to radically change who got benefits and for how long, Honkala used her considerable talents in guerrilla theater to fight bureaucrats on behalf of a rising tide of dispossessed women and children. She keeps the TV news spotlight on the homeless with a host of inspired acts: a long-term tent city for displaced families, the takeover of a church, a grungy encampment next to the Liberty Bell. Nonetheless, folks dispute how helpful such confrontations are. Odessa Williams, a resourceful, resilient woman who supports four grandchildren and then doubles that number when new troubles strike, is the other sympathetic subject in this tough, humanizing portrait of women on welfare by Pulitzer Prize-winning newspaper editor David Zucchino.

From Library Journal
In North Philadelphia, Odessa Williams, a great-grandmother, picks through trash to furnish her home and clothe her grandchildren. She also goes fishing to provide extra food and charges people for rides to and from the welfare office and supermarket to supplement her meager income. Cheri Honkala and others set up tent cities, take over an abandoned church, and occupy vacant HUD buildings to seek shelter and protest the lack of affordable housing. Against the backdrop of the welfare reform act, which revoked the federal guarantee of welfare to low-income families with dependent children, Zucchino, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist with the Philadelphia Inquirer, documents the lives of these women and others over a six-month period. The result, a harrowing description of daily subsistence living with very little chance of change, is a powerful expose of the welfare myth. Highly recommended for all libraries.

From Booklist
Looking behind the "welfare queen" stereotype, Philadelphia Inquirer foreign editor Zucchino attempts to educate readers about the realities that this calumny masks. "From Independence Day 1995 to New Year's Day 1996, [Zucchino] followed the lives of several unmarried welfare mothers living in the ghetto of North Philadelphia." His book "is the story of survival by single mothers during the dying days of the American welfare state." Central to its narrative are Odessa Williams, 56, raising grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as neighbor kids left in the lurch by troubled parents; Cheri Honkalas, activist for the homeless at Philly's Tent City; and Ivory Jennings, a determined teenager with as little tolerance for many of her fellow welfare recipients as conservative Republican politicians. Vivid, powerful portraits of the women behind the stereotype. Mary Carroll

Unsentimental yet powerful narrative
By A Customer
David Zucchino has written an unsentimental yet powerful narrative describing life in the trenches of the welfare system. His recountal reminds us that we cannot disregard the urgency of poverty,as it affects all of us, regardless of our economic situation or our opinion of welfare recepients. Zucchino's attempt to deconstruct the myth of the welfare queen exposes many unsavory details about life below the poverty line ; trash-picking, sex for money, children left in charge of other children. This book requires that the reader step into the shoes of a desperately poor person, leaving behind moral judgments and uninformed opinions. The reader must also remember that Zucchino's intent is not to essentialize the lives of welfare recepients by focusing his record on a few women, but to highlight the insanity of the welfare system and its effects on disenfranchised individuals; the interminable red tape, the constant harrasment by bureaucrats, and the poor distribution of funds and materials. After reading this book, we should reexamine the ways in which we show our moral obligation to those who need help.

The Myth of the Welfare Queen enthralls reader
By Christine
The beauty of this book is the simplicity with which it is written. There are not technical terms to maneuver around. It takes a very candid look at a world many of us will never experience. It shows the very human characteristics of single mothers on welfare. The book never gets boring because it reads like a story. This is a non-fiction piece with all the compelling attributes of a fictional novel. This is not just a light rainy-day read either. It forces you to look into the lives of these women. Zucchino describes Odessa and Cheri's horrible necessicities like dumpster diving and prostitution so flippantly, it makes you want to scream, "But these women shouldn't be living like this!"

Unbiased Journalistic View That WIll Make You Think
By Jessica
This is not the book to read if you are trying to make up your mind about welfare issues or reinforce the ideas that you already have. It is an amazingly unjudgemental look at the lives of those on welfare in the inner city that will at times make you raving mad, whether at the people who refuse to work with the system for the sake of their children or at a system that fails those who give everything they have to take care of children they only want the best for, and sometimes have no direct responsibility for (grandchildren, children they have taken in). It puts real situations and struggles in the place of the abstract idea of public assistance. Within the pages you will meet kindhearted, incredibly nonbitter people, like Odessa, who you will admire and, at the same time, long to reach out to. Those who you would pity for their horrible circumstances if only you could not tell from reading about their lives that they are far too good of people to need or want pity. You will also meet people who you cannot feel sympathy for. People you will want to just slap for their irresponsibility and for not putting their children's needs before their own whims. This book shows just how complex the issue of welfare is, and that a set of laws or policies is not going help some people who are just stuck between a rock and a hard place. It will show you that there is no typical welfare recipients, even among those living in one neighborhood. Though some of the people are unbelievably good , and some horrible individuals, it will show the many greys in between. It is a portrait of those suffering for the nation's view of the "Welfare Queen." Those with huge hearts and horrible circumstances infinity entitled to whatever they need to do the job that we would not want to (raising troubled grandchildren amd great-grandchildren with meager means like Odessa, or being the self-appointed guardian of the homeless like Cheri). It is also a portrait of those who stubbornly refuse to help themselves, and fully live up to the idea of the irresponsible, neglectful mother who rather hang out with different men and continue to get pregnant than think of her own children. This is not a book that will make up your mind, but it is one that will give you an understanding of why this is such a hard issue to even begin to think of any sort of solution for.
