About the Author
Dr. Miller (Ph.D., University of Minnesota) is professor of psychology at San Francisco State University. She has held faculty positions at the University of Michigan, the University of Florida, and the University of Georgia and also has served as Department Head, Associate Dean, and Director of Women’s Studies. Her research focuses on cognitive development during childhood. More specifically, she studies cognitive strategies, executive function, metacognition, memory, attention, social cognitive development, theory of mind, and gender. Her theoretical interests include theories of development and feminist theories of knowledge. One current topic of interest, the effects of exercise on children’s executive function and school achievement, is funded by NIH.

About the Author

Gordon L. Rottman entered the US Army in 1967 and served in the 5th Special Forces Group in Vietnam in 1969–70, and in airborne infantry, long-range patrol, and intelligence assignments until retiring. He was a Special Operations Forces scenario writer at the Joint Readiness Training Center, and is now a freelance writer, living in Texas.

Peter Dennis has since contributed to hundreds of books, predominantly on historical subjects, including many Osprey titles. He lives in Nottinghamshire, UK.

Fire support for the infantry...

An often overlooked aspect of infantry combat is the role played by supporting weapon systems in helping the rifle-armed infantryman survive and thrive on the battlefield. In the Second World War, a variety of machine guns, mortars, anti-tank guns and rockets, and other systems helped the infantry attack and defend. This Osprey Elite Series helps sort out the systems and how they were used.

Author Gordon Rottman can fairly be called an expert on infantry, and "World War II Infantry Fire Support Tactics" reflects that deep understanding of how fire support tactics enable the Infantry. In a concise 62 pages of text, the author describes the various forms of fire support tactics used by the American, British, German, and Soviet armies. In the process, he wrestles with differences of terminology between the various forces, and their distinctive use of what was available. Parts of the discussion may be rather dry for the general reader, but for the student of the conflict, there is real meat here.

This reviewer was especially fascinated by the examples of use cited by the author, included an extended one from the Siegfried Line in 1944. The text is nicely backed by an excellent collection of period photographs and modern illustrations and battlefield diagrams. The latter actually lay out in time and space how supporting arms helped infantry units. Highly recommended to students of infantry combat.

Despite the fact that it covers so much and is so short still does a pretty good job

This book is part of Osprey’s “Elite” series. As such it is relatively short, at only 62 pages. Of these, about a third (very roughly) consist of illustration of one type or another (i.e., maps, contemporaneous photographs, color plates of weapons discussed, etc.). Considering the fact that a large number of weapons are discussed (mortars, grenade launchers, anti-tank and infantry guns, light, medium and heavy machine guns, man-held anti-tank weapons such as bazookas, PIATs, panzerfausts) as well as their tactical use from the perspective of the US, Britain, Germany and the USSR and how they fit into each army from an organizational chart perspective, this reviewer thought, before reading the book, that the book would be spread too thin and, as a result, would at most rate a three-star rating. This is usually a big problem with books in this series that are weak. The most prevalent cause of weakness in books of this series is the fact that so many try to overreach. Quite a problem considering that they are only 62 pages in length. However, this reader was pleasantly surprised to learn that this was not the case with this particular volume. It was surprisingly good despite the fact that it covers so many weapons, their tactical use and organization across four different armies as well as how their use evolved over the course of the war.

The book provides not only a basic overview of each class of weapon but also differences in those weapons across the US, Britain, Germany and USSR. The reader learns of the major differences and similarities between the powers. For example, German machine guns had a rate of fire about double of that of the other three weapons. That, in reality, the same weapons were used many times with different designations depending on tactical use. For example, the German MG 42 was the same basic weapon in both “light” and “heavy” designations but that this nomenclature only referred to the fact that the “light” was intended for relatively close in-use while “heavy” was the same basic weapon (albeit with a heavy tripod instead of a bipod) used for long range fire.

As well as discussing the specific weapon classes and their differences between nations, the author also discusses tactical differences in their use between these nations. In addition, the author discusses the organizational structures relevant to each weapon. Also discussed is the evolution of each weapon over the course of the war and how that, too, differed by the different nations. For example, light man handled anti-tank guns of the 37 mm or so size were gradually phased out as the war progressed and how mortars became more important to the Germans as the war progressed but less so for the allies (because heavier artillery was becoming more available to them and less so for the Germans). The author concludes with a short discussion of how the various classes of weapons discussed in the book evolved over the post-war period. The author does all of this fairly well, especially considering the fact that he is so constrained by the format (and length) of this series.

The book does have a few weaknesses though. One is that there is a shortage of color plates illustrating the weapons, especially on a side by side basis (these are only provided for bazookas and PIATs, not other weapons such as machine guns). A second is that there are no tables that sum up and compare the weapons across the different nations covered (i.e., ranges, etc.). Then again, this book is only 62 pages in length so these weaknesses are easily forgiven.

In short, a very good succinct introduction. Four to 4.5 stars.

Excellent discussion of the subject for the amateur military tactician, especially for a 60-page book. The book describes tactics, organizational structure, and weapons of the British, US, German, and Soviet armies at the platoon, company, battalion, and regiment levels. There are short comparisons or tabulations of weapons performance of the various armies: mortars, infantry guns, anti-tank guns, and so forth. Several reasonably good color maps are provided showing attack and defensive maneuvers.

About the Author
Dr Christina Quinlan is a social scientist. She has taught research methods to both undergraduate and postgraduate students at Dublin City University for several years. She is interested in both quantitative and qualitative research and she has a particular interest in visual methods Christina published a book on women's experiences of imprisonment in Ireland in 2011 with Irish Academic Press. Her current research interests include: Qualitative and Quantitative Research Methods, Image Based Research, Feminist Research, Media and Communications, Social Control, Prisons and Penality, Narratives of End of Life Experiences, Cross Cultural Communication, Development Issues, Poverty and Marginalized Populations. William G. Zikmund, Ph.D., was a professor of marketing at Oklahoma State University until his death in 2002. He received his bachelor of science degree in marketing from the University of Colorado, a master of science degree from Southern Illinois University, and a Ph.D. in business administration with a concentration in marketing from the University of Colorado. Professor Zikmund worked in marketing research for Conway/Millikin Company and Remington Arms Company before beginning his academic career, and he had extensive consulting experience with business and not-for-profit organizations. Professor Zikmund published dozens of articles and papers in a diverse group of scholarly journals, including the JOURNAL OF MARKETING, ACCOUNTING REVIEW, and the JOURNAL OF APPLIED PSYCHOLOGY. He was the author of the successful textbooks EXPLORING MARKETING RESEARCH, BUSINESS RESEARCH METHODS, MARKETING, and EFFECTIVE MARKETING, as well as a work of fiction: A CORPORATE BESTIARY. Professor Zikmund was a member of several professional organizations, including the American Marketing Association, the Academy of Marketing Science, the Association for Consumer Research, the Society for Marketing Advances, the Marketing Educators' Association, and the Association of Collegiate Marketing Educators. He served on the editorial review boards of the JOURNAL OF MARKETING EDUCATION, MARKETING EDUCATION REVIEW, JOURNAL OF THE ACADEMY OF MARKETING SCIENCE, and JOURNAL OF BUSINESS RESEARCH. Business Research Methods This a marginally helpful book, written by an very intelligent person whom I doubt very much is a 'professional author'. There are numerous typos in both the text and the sidebars. Sometimes references to tables and articles within 1-2 pages of the text left me wondering whether this book was even edited! Christina Quinlan is an "European author"; i.e., notwithstanding that she's from Europe, there is virtually NO reference to indicate diversity was considered in writing this book! There are several "philosophies" offered in the text; aside from feminism, this book might as well have stated "all research was developed by white males but women have a voice, too..." Forget that there are numerous other cultures that have contributed to research literature: none are referenced here nor included in the examples. I take pride in only paying US $24 for this book and look forward to it being the first textbook I've sold in years.

Shocked at the truth in this book

For me, this book above all other self-help books on the subject I've read really hit home. I was physically and emotionally abused for most of my childhood. Once I grew up and left home I became involved with emotionally abusive men again and again, for the last several years. I couldn't understand why I always seemed to pick the wrong guy, and why life was so painful, and demeaning. Through therapy and self-help books I was able to come to some realizations. This book was so powerful that halfway through I had to put it down for some time because the personal truths I arrived at were so painful to face. I hope any person out there who is going through or has been through an emotionally abusive relationship will give this book a try. It is well worth it.

Take the Time

It can take years, even a lifetime, to heal from emotional abuse. The author, Beverly Engel, lets us know within the first pages that she has endured a history of abuse, and from this background, she has made her career choices, mainly, to become a therapist helping others in similar circumstances.

The abused person is often taken by surprise, emotionally involved before the abuse fully takes hold. The abuser often has a two-sided personality, referred to as Jekyll and Hyde - one charming and intelligent and likeable, the other a cruel and perverse tormentor.

Engel writes: "It is often difficult for a woman to admit that she is indeed being emotionally abused, particularly if she is competent and successful in other respects... many women who are being emotionally abused do not even realize what is happening to them. Many suffer from the effects of emotional abuse - depression, lack of motivation, confusion, difficulty concentrating or making decisions, low self-esteem, feelings of failure, worthlessness, and hopelessness, self-blame, and self-destructiveness - but do not understand what is causing these symptoms."

The process seeps into the psyche like a slow poison, rearranging our ability to cope. "She has become so beaten down emotionally that she blames herself for the abuse. Her self-esteem is so low that she clings to her abuser."

Which is perhaps the hardest to understand, by the woman herself as well as family and friends who keep asking - "Why do you stay? Why do you put up with it?" - and never find a rational answer. There is none. Engel explains, "Emotional-abuse victims become so convinced they are worthless that they believe no one else could possibly want them. They stay in abusive situations because they believe they have nowhere else to go."

Engel takes us through the ways that emotional abuse expresses itself and how it works. "Emotionally abusive lovers and mates cause tremendous damage to a woman's ego. They have our trust, our vulnerability, our hearts, and our bodies. Using a variety of tactics, an abusive husband or lover can damage a woman's self-esteem, make her doubt her desirability and hate her body, and break her heart... When we love someone we tend to make excuses for his behavior; we always want to give him the benefit of the doubt. This is especially true when the other person is good to us in other ways." The abuser, Engel writes, makes his partner believe "she was so stupid, ugly, and unlovable that she was lucky to have him... told her she wasn't as pretty as the other girls he had dated, that she wasn't good in bed, and that his friends didn't think she was good enough for him."

And who is he? Often, Engel says, he is an addict of some kind, whether to alcohol or drugs or sex, and his own self-esteem is so low that he can keep a partner only by causing her self-esteem to be even lower than his own. He is frequently the product of abuse himself, often taking on the traits of his own abusers. He tends to be socially isolated, unable to maintain any healthy friendships or other relationships.

Once Engel has helped us understand the process and the damage done by it, she encourages and instructs on how to release years of pent-up rage in constructive manner, while rebuilding confidence. There are no shortcuts to healing. Finally, she helps us to understand how to stop repeating the cycle by finishing unfinished business, how to recognize the red flags of an abusive person when we first meet him. If we have not allowed the time to release our anger and heal the damage, we are doomed to repeat the pattern.

For this reason above all, this is an important book to read for anyone who has felt the lash of such abuse. Take the time to understand. Take the time to work through the damage. Take the time to heal. Take the time to nurture yourself back to health and rebuild your ability to love and to know real love when you meet it.

Engel gives a concise description of what emotional abuse is, and the types of abusers and victims.
She helps to uncover the patterns and reasons for abuse,
ways to recover from it.
Like many women in emotionally abusive relationships, it
was very difficult for me to even see it occurring.
Her book is a constant reminder of how to stop the cycle,
both for me and for my children.

Compared to the number of ethnographies and serious studies of cultural interest that exist in the world, the number of books on anthropological methodology are few. Certain books on "participant observation"---the classic method of anthropologists (and some sociologists as well)---can be found in libraries, but works on the experience and thought processes of anthropologists in the field are far less common. Even 'how-to-do-it' courses for budding anthropologists are found only rarely. Anthropological field work remains a kind of "vision quest", similar to those embarked upon by Native American youths in the old days. The anthropologist is expected to leave the campus and library, journey to another society, immerse him/herself in its culture, and come back with fresh insights. It is a kind of sink-or-swim situation and resembles initiation rites more than a little. An anthropologist who has not done field work, who has not undergone this ritual, cannot really be called an anthropologist.

Hortense Powdermaker was one of the earliest women to do field work. A student of the famous Malinowski in Britain, she travelled in the 1920s to the Melanesian island of New Ireland, now part of Papua New Guinea, to study a remote village. In those days, anthropologists specialized in describing "whole cultures", the more isolated the better, rather than focussing on a specific problem or question. Later, in the `30s, she conducted research in and around Indianola, Mississippi---an extremely delicate operation, given the rigid segregation then in force. She went on to study Hollywood and then the influence of media among Africans in Zambia's Copper Belt. She taught all her life and passed away at age 73 in 1970. After reading STRANGER AND FRIEND, I deeply regretted not having had the chance to meet her, because she impressed me strongly as a most decent, open, intelligent human being.

This book should be required reading for every young anthropologist heading for field work. The problems of culture shock, the difficulties of participating in local life as well as looking on it with a detached eye, entry problems, how to keep notes, when to do a survey and when not to, how to weave your way through or around local factions or rivals contesting the same turf, and the question of questioning your own perceptions---all these and many more issues are discussed in a very readable, interesting style. Even if the world has changed, gotten so globalized, her work is still of importance. What comes through very strongly in Powdermaker's work is her feeling for common humanity. She could empathize with anyone, anywhere and perhaps become friends with them even if, for them, she was a stranger from a strange land. At a time when most Westerners saw Pacific islanders as mere "natives", she could live, eat and dance with them, count a few as friends. At a time when most white Americans saw "Negroes" as "the other" and usually an "inferior other" at that, she worked, ate, and socialized with them without difficulty. Nowadays this presents no problem, but in the 1930s, she could have been taking her life in her hands. She was a woman with guts, and a belief in the equality of Man at a time when it was rare. I admired her no end, and thought that her honest portrayal of how she did her research was well worth 5 stars.

True tales of family, friends and what matters most

For those of us who cherish the smallest of things, found, given or inherited, Project Keepsake validates our desires and feelings. As I read the stories, I thought of all the little “keepsakes” I have stored away; items that only have meaning to me, even though I hope they will someday for my children and grandchildren. Very Impressive

Palmer Chiropractic College in San Jose purchased this text for its library. I read some of the text as it pertained to my interests in diabetes. The chapters are split into diseases/disorders which makes finding what you need much easier. Then the chapter will specify what natural substances are used and why with references to peer-reviewed articles from respected scientific journals. It's an easy to follow formula. It'll be up to the reader to take the material and find the food at your local specialty food store. I consider the material to be first rate and saves time doing the research on my own. It's perfect for the student, practitioner, or consumer interested in real, scientific, evidence-based research on what really works. You'll take charge of your own health and stop listening to the garbage in the media. This text needs to be Kindle-based as I don't anticipate taking it to the store with me.
