This is a basic book, but the basics are the foundation of success. Basics are EASY TO LEARN but essential to master, or you will keep failing, even though you try all kinds of "patterns" and "programming" of women, and "game." DO WHAT WORKS! This book covers, in great detail but using as few words as necessary to get the point across, exactly where to find the type of girls YOU want to meet, and what to say to them. If you read and master this one book you will do well with women forever, without having to spend hundreds of dollars on home-study courses or thousands of dollars on seminars: and make no mistake: thousands of men do. I know: I have attended those seminars as a guest teacher. 
Here are some basics you need to know in order to do well with women (generally speaking--of course occasional exceptions exist):

When you meet a girl for the first time, several factors will decide how "hot" she thinks you are and how fast she will try to please you. If  you are a rock star and it is your concert, you are a 10 and she is a 3, or even a 2. You are in total control of your interaction and she will do all kinds of things she never tells mommy and daddy--all to impress you with her sex-appeal. On the other hand, if you are at a party and she has spent 3 hours perfecting her look (dress, hair, make-up, attitude, etc.) and is surrounded by her friends and several dumb guys all pawing at her, she is now at the 9-10 part of the scale psychologically and you are anywhere from 2 to 7 at best. She is in control. It is even worse at a club, where you are expected to spend money and time impressing her.

You can change the balance of power at any time. You do this by thinking ahead. You know what you are good at. You know your strengths (and weaknesses) and you should always have some of your strengths on display. Don't be like that reality TV-show star who is always taking off his shirt to show off his abs. That is just stupid and gets old very fast. But make sure that you are always projecting your best qualities, even if they seem to go unseen. You can also increase your sexual identity by being different--by subtly asserting your unique identity. Being yourself--being different, or non-generic shows a girl that you have the confidence she does not. You can be whomever you want because you don't care about what other people say or think about you--you are having too much fun in life being you. This is imperative to master. Girl's want to have fun, not be pawed and worshiped by another cretin (loser) with noting exciting to offer. Going back to #1 (above); if you are in your moment of power (e.g. you are a jock at the football game, or you are the chess master and you are in the championship finals, and so on...) you radiate power and generic appeal that you do not when you are wearing a suit and tie at work, in your cubicle, on Wednesday afternoon. But, if you have some small but noticeable "thing" about you that piques women's interest (and you don't have to impress every one of them) you will find them much more interested in you and your confidence will rise naturally from all of the extra attention.

Always make friends with women. It is a cliché that women never have sex with their friends. (This is a lie--a LOT of women have sex with their friends; when they are drunk, when their friends are hot, when they are lonely, when they realize they "really like" their friends...), but making friends with women disempowers and demystifies women in general. They are no longer foreign objects, or strange creatures from the planet "I want some of that!" You easily become comfortable with women in general which makes it easier for you to be comfortable with the women you want to do all kinds of fun things with. By contrast, if you cannot make casual friends with women you will have a much harder time getting the ones you want to do ANYTHING you want. Go easy on yourself; practice being yourself on your women friends. Practice increasing your sexual appeal with people (female ones) who already like you. This will make it infinitely easier to approach the super-hotties you can't seem to stop drooling over. It will also help your sexual prowess, as getting with a girl won't be such a huge accomplishment that your body gets all orgasmic on you at the thought of her touching you.

An excellent guide for the average man

This book is hilarious - and it works. It is a step-by-step guide to meeting girls on the street (coffeehouses, laundromats, grocery stores, gas stations... you get the idea). We didn't really see much on funerals: the author did mention picking up girls at funerals, so we were hoping for a bit more detail on that. But what you will learn here is how to approach ANY girl casually, no matter where you are, and with no stress on you: no matter "how hot you think she is." Then you will learn how to transition from "hello" into getting the girl interested enough in you to give you a few minutes of her time to work your magic, and then get her number. Not to worry, the author even has a few tricks to show you how to do that as well. This book is a MUST HAVE, but it is far from the only book you should read.

This book will not make you a superstar PUA, but if you have any game at all, what you will learn here will definitely improve your performance just about anywhere. You will even learn how to pick up girls in front of your girlfriend, and how to pick up 2-3 girls at once (in front of each other). We tried some of these techniques and they were as easy as the author claims. Of course we have had some practice over the years, but even so, this is stuff any guy can - and should - master.

The price was reasonable enough - about 1/2 the cost of a cheap first date, and the laughs were pretty good as well. If you do get a copy of this book, **be sure to read the entire thing**. It is a 30 day home study course on picking up girls you see everywhere, but it is also a course on becoming more popular in general. It won't teach you game, but it will teach you how to use what you've got - even if you only have a little.

Decent, but information overload dude!

Okay, so I liked the book - but if it were about 50 pages shorter I might have liked it a lot better. This guy starts off with how to pick up chicks wherever you see them every day, and he goes too much into why this approach works, and how this other approach is weak or strong (he sounds like my old professors), and then he has this cool section on how to read their palms (I have seen guys do this stuff - that and that trick where they tell your future by your handwriting). Anyway, that was all okay, and of course he has to spend a hundred pages telling you how to put all of this together; what to do if she says this, what to do if her boyfriend shows up, how to get out of a conversation with a psycho chick (I say just leave - don't even say goodbye), and then he has some tests, and experiences from people I really don't care about. No offense but I just ant to know how I can get laid, you know?

This book has a TON of information but I felt like I was back in school. I did try what he said over the past week and a half and it seems to be working, I got a few chick's phone numbers, but I think he could have saved me a lot of time reading by just telling me straight out how to approach hotties at the store, gas station (and so on), get the number and leave it at that. Once I have a girl's number in my pocket I think I know what to do. I don't know. Does it work? Sure. And it is funny at times. But it is pretty heavy stuff. look, if you are looking for something really quick, check out Seduce Me. The Mystery Method is also killer, but it takes a while to build up your game using his techniques. Mystery is out to turn guys into PUAs. A book like this or Seduce me is just about having some fun meeting hicks and getting dates when you want one.

About the Author

Dani Rodrik is a Turkish economist and Ford Foundation Professor of International Political Economy at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. He was formerly the Albert O. Hirschman Professor of the Social Sciences at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. He has published widely in the areas of international economics, economic development, and political economy. The question of what constitutes good economic policy and why some governments are more successful than others at adopting it, is at the center of his research. His works include Economic Rules: The Rights and Wrongs of the Dismal Science and The Globalization Paradox: Democracy and the Future of the World Economy. He is also joint editor-in-chief of the academic journal Global Policy.

Top notch look at Gloablziation from a fresh perspective

Dani Rodrik tackles the issue on the state of Globalization for the institute for international economics think tank with surprising insight and intellectual power. This is a great look from an economists prospective (graphs and data analysis included) on where globalization is today. This is not a tired rehashing of long discussed topics but a fresh take on where globalization is today. The book begins by looking at where the labor market is and assessing the consequences for unskilled labor and the elasticity of demand for workers as the curve flattens with increased globalization of the workforce. It is followed by tension in trade and domestic policy from child labor to fair trade and the strikes of workers as globalization increases. One of the more interesting chapters is the argument hat with the increase in globalization the demand for social insurance rose and with the diminishing tax base is now one of the cruxes that is poised to cause potential harm within the world economic order. Mobile capital has shifted tax bases and is putting strain on government budgets to meet the demands of its citizens. Overall an excellent addition to the issues on globalization and one that is not to be missed.

I have to admit that I only read the first 20 pages before giving up.

This book appears to be a think-tank product richly supported by business to answer a question which they are too prejudiced to answer honestly.

Platinum Engineers Reveal their secrets?

I am very disappointed with the book.

The book on the cover claimed: "Mix Masters Platinum Engineers Reveal Their Secrets for Success" but all we got was biographies and list of equipment they use with 1176 popping up almost on every other page.

The question "How much can you normally get done in a day" just was the nail to the coffin.

I read the book and I have not learned anything from it. If you are really bored on Winter night when there is a blizzard outside you can read it but I rather suggest you go to your studio and work on your music.

The book is also pretty outdated, lots of stories about mixing on analog or digital tape.

Solidly revised and updated new addition is needed from the author.

Great Book

I am an audio engineer and I learned a lot from this book. One of the best things about it is that it contains information that is useful to everyone whether experienced or just starting out. The technical tips are good, but so are the stories of how the people interviewed became successful, and also their ideas and philosophies about recording and mixing music. I recommend this book.

The concluding chapters chart the fall of Suharto's New Order after thirty two years in power, and the subsequent political and religious turmoil which culminated in the Bali bombings in 2002. Adrian Vickers is Professor of Asian Studies at the University of Wollongong. He has previously worked at the Universities of New South Wales and Sydney, and has been a visiting fellow at the University of Indonesia and Udayana University (Bali). Vickers has more than twenty-five years research experience in Indonesia and the Netherlands, and has travelled in Southeast Asia, the U.S. and Europe in the course of his research. He is author of the acclaimed Bali: a Paradise Created (Penguin, 1989) as well as many other scholarly and popular works on Indonesia. In 2003 Adrian Vickers curated the exhibition Crossing Boundaries, a major survey of modern Indonesian art, and has also been involved in documentary films, including Done Bali (Negara Film and Television Productions, 1993).

10 Things I learned from A History of Modern Indonesia

1. History is best told when it isn't a litany of dates and places and names.

2. History is better told when it attempts to describe the zeitgeist of the era, when it makes a time and place alive for you.

3. Vickers accomplishes this in describing the history of modern Indonesia, from the late colonial period to the present day. He includes the important dates, but takes special care to note the discourses and debates that shaped the events, and the daily lives of the poor and the rich and those struggling to hold their place in between.

4. I read this book for my research, but found it so compelling that I began to read it for pleasure, a rare turn.

5. Vickers makes sense of the complex and often covert history of Indonesia, which has experienced several volatile changes in the 20th century.

The radical shifts in leadership, ideology and policy - from colonialism to Sukarno's near-communism to the still-unsolved coup that confirmed Suharto's dictatorial technocracy, to the protests that overthrew him and invited a string of presidents in the last nine years - are illustrated by how it affected peoples' lives.

6. This is a history that takes into account the effect of political climate on art, literature, film and other manifestations of culture. It notes these arenas as both evidence for the contemporary mindset and as catalysts for change.

7. Vickers uses the voices of Presidents, the voices of laborers, and the voices of everyone in between to bring to life more than one hundred years of history.

8. Whereas other histories treat the cultural sphere and lived lives as separate matters, as anecdotes, as separate chapters, or not at all, Vickers' work is infused with these voices and cultures.

9. In addition, it offers the known history and biographies of important people who helped shape it.

10. One of the best books on Indonesian history that I've read, A History of Modern Indonesia is recommended to the scholarly as well as the curious for a comprehensive and compelling look at the recent history of the fourth largest country in the world.

Highly Readable and Contemporary

Preparing to live in Indonesia for 10 months, I bought this book and read it cover to cover. It was not a chore to do so -- far from it! The only dull bit was a few pages in chapter 5, but maybe I was just feeling let down after the excellence of the first four chapters, in which Vickers sums up the Dutch colonial era with no punches pulled and guides us through the birth of nationalism and the revolution that carried Sukarno to power in the new nation in 1949. I felt as if Vickers rather likes Sukarno, while being fully aware of his less admirable traits.

Before reading this book, I had read two and a half of the four novels in Pramoedya Ananta Toer's Buru Quartet, and it's possible that I was particularly well prepared to enjoy Vickers's approach, which brings Pramoedya and related Indonesian writers and journalists into the story from time to time in a way that personalized the history more than you'd see in a typical history text. But I think someone who had no familiarity with Pramoedya's novels (or his life) would not be put off by this approach -- it does not dominate the text or interfere with the thread of history.

Chapter 6 covers the transition from Sukarno to Suharto as clearly as possible (I've read several accounts of this, and Vickers's is the best by far). The rest of the book takes us up to the tsunami of December 2004, and maybe the only real flaw in this text is the brief treatment of the events of 1998 and 1999. Even though that part of the story is not as rich as the years leading up to independence, the final chapters held my interest and helped me become familiar with how the country fared under Suharto and during the time immediately afterward.

I'm filling in the blanks for the 1998-99 time frame with this book: In the Time of Madness: Indonesia on the Edge of Chaos

A particularly excellent aspect of Vickers's text is the careful attention Vickers gives to the role of the United States in various events in Indonesia's history -- immediately after World War II, for example, and in the subjugation of East Timor. The Cold War interests of the U.S. and its view of Southeast Asia in the 1960s and 1970s are given their place in the story. As an American, I appreciated this, even though it was not flattering.

The book includes several wonderful maps, a detailed chronology at the front (three pages), and a very helpful who's who at the end (pages 225-232). I am very, very satisfied with this book!

Good for a quick overview of Indonesian modern politics

I read this book to prep for a business school paper I was writing for a global economics final project. I needed a complete summary of Indonesian modern history as quickly as possible.

This book provided the facts that I needed and proved to be a fast and easy read. Some of the timelines traced in the book got a bit confusing, but once I had the background details, I found other online timelines to help with clarification of names and dates. Nothing on line provided, however, provided the detail of this book. It was invaluable in giving me information about politics in Indonesia.

I do not recommend this as a fun or relaxing read, but if you are searching for facts and general knowledge about Indonesian politics, this book is a good start.

About the Author
Chef Zachary Golper opened his bakery Bien Cuit in the Boerum Hill section of Brooklyn in July 2011. It was named Best New Bakery by the Village Voice and made Best of 2011 lists in both the New York Times and New York magazine. National publications Food & Wine, Saveur, Harpers Bazaar, and USA Today have honored the bakery as one of the Best Bakeries in NYC and Best American Bakeries. Bon Appetit also selected Bien Cuit’s baguette as one of the top ten in America. 

Peter Kaminsky’s cookbooks include collaborations with Daniel Boulud, Michel Richard, Francis Mallmann, and Sheila Lukins. His outdoors column has appeared in the New York Times for more than twenty-five years. Kaminsky has contributed frequently to Food & Wine and is the author of Pig Perfect and Culinary Intelligence. He is also one of the creators and executive producers of The Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.

A different look at long fermentation that has had great results for me. Looking to finish all of Zachary's recipes.

Tip of my hat to Zachary, I am enjoying your method of making bread. Still working my way through your book.
My nest project is your use of sour dough starter for your bagels along with a bulk fermentation, then shaping, etc....
Really enjoy the way your book lays flat so I don't have to hold open a regular book.
Can't wait to my trip back east to visit your shop and sample your products. Maybe even get to chat with you.

A must addition to your eclectic library.

I am a Baking and Pastry student at New England Culinary Institute. My artisan bread instructor recommended this book to me, and I am baking "side projects" from this , as it is not in the primary focus of my class curriculum. What a GREAT book.! I've made the White
Pullman loaf, and the Sunflour Seed Rye, so far. Following his directions closely (his methods are different from what I'm doing at NECI), each loaf has come out perfectly. I personally find that I am drawn to this mindset, and methodology, and I think this sort or style of bread is very popular these days.....rustic,handmade ..with a crust that appears to have endured a re-entry trip through the atmosphere back to earth. If you buy the book, and actually work with it....the binding scheme will show itself as being very practical and useful, it lays flat on the bench at every page! As I am beginning to learn this Chef's ways of working the dough, I like to have the book open as I proceed through a new trial. All in all a well thought out product and offering, this book. And an exciting journey through something new, for some of us.

I am so impressed, as a beginner

I have not actually started leaning to make bread yet, so I'm not sure I should be reviewing here. I have obtained a number of books/authors that are highly spoken of and have especially collected Peter Reinhart's books - I think he's fabulous. I have the Bread Bible; Tartine Bread; Salt, Water, Yeast; and several others - but this book, this book should have been my FIRST book! Sure, it's impressive with it's wooden cover, etc., but it is a great instructional and reading book for the beginner. I'm done collecting - I have a great library - but this will be the one I begin with.

I did go to the poor reviews to see the complaints and am glad I did - so I can be very careful with the binding. But given it came in it's own box, even if it falls apart, I have a place to store it safely. It sounds as though a creative and artsy idea has not been rugged enough - as for me, I didn't care. The contents of the book are all that's important. I'm a tactile person, and while I use kindle, I like to flip through a book in my hands and luxuriate over photos, be bad and fold down corners, and such. I see that experienced people have enjoyed this book, so I am glad to have it, fragile or not.

Milka Levy-Rubin's remarkable book traces the emergence of these regulations from the first surrender agreements in the immediate aftermath of conquest to the formation of the canonic document called the Pact of 'Umar, which was formalized under the early 'Abbasids, in the first half of the ninth century. What the study reveals is that the conquered peoples themselves played a major role in the creation of these policies, and that these were based on long-standing traditions, customs, and institutions from earlier pre-Islamic cultures that originated in the worlds of both the conquerors and the conquered. In its connections to Roman, Byzantine, and Sasanian traditions, the book will appeal to historians of Europe as well as Arabia and Persia.
