About the Author
Dr. Ian Pepper is currently a Professor at the University of Arizona. He is also Director of the University of Arizona, Environmental Research Laboratory (ERL) and the NSF Water and Environmental Technology (WET) Center. Dr. Pepper is an environmental microbiologist specializing in the molecular ecology of the environment. His research has focused on the fate and transport of pathogens in air, water, soils and wastes. His expertise has been recognized by membership on six National Academy of Science Committees and former memberships on an EPA FIFRA Science and Advisory Panel. Dr. Pepper is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Academy of Microbiology, the Soil Science Society of America, and the American Society of Agronomy. He is also a Board Certified Environmental Scientist within the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists. He is the author or co-author of six textbooks; 40 book chapters; and over 180 peer-review journal articles.

Dr. Charles P. Gerba is a Professor at the University of Arizona. He conducts research the transmission of pathogens through the environment. His recent research encompasses the transmission of pathogens by water, food and fomites; fate of pathogens in land applied wastes; development of new disinfectants; domestic microbiology and microbial risk assessment. He has been an author on more than 500 articles including several books in environmental microbiology and pollution science. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. In 1998 he received the A. P. Black Award from the American Water Works Association for outstanding contributions to water science and in 1996 he received the McKee medal from the Water Environment Federation for outstanding contributions to groundwater protection. He received the 1999 Award of Excellence in Environmental Health from National Association of County and City Health Officials.

Great Book, Very Informative

I completed my BS Environmental Health a few years ago and currently work in the environmental, health, and safety field. This book is great and is very informative, with an excellent breadth of information. It touches on many interesting and important topics, but doesn't go too far into detail about any in-particular. It also contains wonderful illustrations to help with learning various topics. Overall I really enjoy this book and would recommend it to anyone in the environmental field.

Teaches powerful and elegant techniques

This is one of the most useful Excel books I have read. The author did a fantastic job in demonstrating unique solutions to common Excel challenges.

While there were many useful tips, two were especially helpful which I utilize in everyday use of Excel:

* Overriding cell formulas. The use of a relative reference in a defined name is brilliant. Previously, I allowed overrides by writing cumbersome VBA code to restore the original formula and unprotecting everything to modify formulas, but the tip demonstrated in this book is so much more elegant and efficient.

* The topic on trimming worksheet cells on large blocks of cells. This was worth the price of the book in my opinion. I had downloaded some Excel utilities that had code to trim cells on a worksheet. The code was written the "typical" way as described in the book. It performed adequately on smaller numbers of cells, but got overwhelmed on large blocks. I knew that cells could be read into an array and that an array could be written to a block of cells, but I would have never thought to process data in an array as demonstrated here. What used to take minutes trimming cells individually now takes seconds using the techniques presented.

Not so great

Already know a lot of this stuff. Don't especially like the format. It's a little rinky dink and thus not that easy to follow. They should take the the font size down and try to get more info on a page. But then they wouldn't have a book. The ideas are OK, but in my opinion, stick with Bill Jelen or John Walkenbach.

About the Author
Scott Pritchett, author of the critically acclaimed three volume series Uniforms and Insignia of the Großdeutschland Division, capped a distinguished thirty-one year military career as the Chief of Anti-Terrorism and Force Protection, Joint Staff, J3,Pentagon. He is a graduate of the United States Army Military Academy and is a highly decorated veteran of OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM. For over forty years, Scott has collected German Army Panzer uniforms, insignia, photographs and documents, all which are exhibited in his, Man Cave Museum, in his home in Virginia. Beside his collection, he and his wife, Pat, have been wonderfully blessed with four fantastic adult children and a superb son-in-law.

Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book. This is a very *unique* book in terms of contents and approach. Unlike most other books in the area of wireless communications, its approach is rather from electromagnetic theories (or physics), which is particularly interesting. Also, noise is explained in detail based on antenna temperature. Chapters 6 and 7 are also interesting. For example, the concept of LOS horizon should be useful in the research for long-range communications. Finally, as in this book, it is always good to have examples at the end of each chapter. ... this book might be possibly considered as supplemental material for teaching certain courses ... . About the Author

Victor L. Granatstein was born and raised in Toronto, Canada. He received his Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from Columbia University, New York, in 1963. After a year of postdoctoral work at Columbia, he became a research scientist at Bell Telephone Laboratories from 1964 to 1972 where he studied microwave scattering from turbulent plasma. In 1972, he joined the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) as a research physicist, and from 1978 to 1983, he served as head of NRL’s High Power Electromagnetic Radiation Branch.

In August 1983, he became a professor in the Electrical Engineering Department of the University of Maryland, College Park. From 1988 to 1998, he was director of the Institute for Plasma Research at the University of Maryland. Since 2008, he has been Director of Research of the Center for Applied Electromagnetics at the University of Maryland. His research has involved invention and development of high-power microwave sources for heating plasmas in controlled thermonuclear fusion experiments, for driving electron accelerators used in high-energy physics research, and for radar systems with advanced capabilities. He also has led studies on the effects of high-power microwaves on integrated electronics. His most recent study is of air breakdown in the presence of both terahertz radiation and gamma rays with possible application to detecting concealed radioactive material. He has coauthored more than 250 research papers in scientific journals and has co-edited three books. He holds a number of patents on active and passive microwave devices.

Granatstein is a Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS) and a Life Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE). He has received a number of major research awards including the E.O. Hulbert Annual Science Award (1979), the Superior Civilian Service Award (1980), the Captain Robert Dexter Conrad Award for scientific achievement (awarded by the Secretary of the Navy, 1981), the IEEE Plasma Science and Applications Award (1991), and the Robert L. Woods Award for Excellence in Electronics Technology (1998). He has spent part of his sabbaticals in 1994, 2003, and 2010 at Tel Aviv University where he holds the position of Sackler Professor by Special Appointment.

What is there to like in "Physical Principles of Wireless Communications"? A lot!

The preface paints the landscape: "Wireless communications is based on the launching, propagation, and detection of electromagnetic waves usually at radio or microwave frequencies." By the end of the book, you'll have covered short-range, medium range and long-range forms of wireless communication. You'll start with the physical principles, gain insight into the supporting theory and equations, and learn examples of how this works in real world applications.

The author begins with a brief but fascinating tour of the history with "An Introduction to Modern Wireless Communications." The chapter is beautifully written and nicely laid out with photos and graphics. The author includes stories of some of the great early physicists and their experiments that led to modern day technology. The breakthroughs of people like Marconi are brought to life in a very memorable way. (Marconi's entrepreneurial inventions enabled shore to ship communications and led to the unanticipated discovery of the ionosphere.) Fascinating background ....

Next, Dr. Granatstein winds his way through a noisy century of scientific and engineering discoveries in radio. You quickly catch up with today's wireless technologies in cell phones, local area networks and satellite communication systems all have grown out of these fundamental principles.

Chapters 3 and 4 present mutually-reinforcing chapters on "Antennas" and "Antenna Arrays". I always wondered how antennas worked - this explains it well. Chapter 5, "Radio Frequency (RF) Wave Propagation" helps you think about propagation challenges - "reflection, refraction, absorption, multipath phase interference and diffraction." These are real world problems for deployments.

By the time you reach chapter 7, you'll start to realize the level of math required to master this subject - this chapter is packed with all sorts of equations.

This book explains the basics of how signals are created, transmitted, and received. But it rapidly accelerates into more advanced territory. The equations of electromagnetic radiation will challenge even the most determined. On the other hand, the figures and graphics are crystal clear and easily accessible to even the most casual reader.

In addition to being full of theory, this book is well populated with practical descriptions of how theory plays out in practice. Simple diagrams convey common material. Figures in chapter 5 depict the basic geometries of waves propagation. Graphics in chapter 6 nicely and simply describe the operation of wireless microwave bridges.

The author is a true expert on his subject. He has a Ph.D in electrical engineering and held positions at Bell Labs, the Naval Research Lab, and conducted decades of research and teaching in a university setting. He has studied, researched, practiced, taught, and now written about the subject. This is as authoritative as an author can be.

The text itself emerged from teaching material to senior EE students, grad students, and engineers working in communication companies. In less than 250 pages of text, the author conveys an important body of knowledge that has been collected over roughly the past 150 years. This book could easily be used in a classroom setting, as a main text or supplemental reading.

So many wireless gadgets are in use today that they are shaping our culture as well as our future technology pathways. "Physical Principles of Wireless Communications" provides a strong foundation for understanding the drivers and implications. About the Author
Allen Dreibelbis has 30 years of experience in the IT Industry. He spent 16 years providing system integration and consulting services to public-sector clients while working for IBM. His expertise spans enterprise architecture, software development, complex systems integration, and Master Data Management. Allen currently is an Executive Architect in the IBM Software Group World-Wide Information Platform and Solutions Acceleration Team. He developed the Master Data Management Reference Architecture in 2006 while collaborating with colleagues across the IBM SWG Information Platform and Solutions organization and the IBM Information on Demand Center of Excellence. He provides customer briefings and training on the Master Data Management Reference Architecture and conducts architecture workshops for customers on implementing Master Data Management Solutions within their enterprises. Allen holds a B.S. in Computer Science from Pennsylvania State University.

Eberhard Hechler is a Senior Certified IT Architect (SCITA) and Executive IT Architect. He joined the IBM Böblingen Lab in Germany in 1983 as a junior programmer. Eberhard worked more than two years on an international assignment with the IBM Kingston Lab in New York, and he has worked on projects in software development, performance optimization and benchmarking, solution architecture and design, software product planning, management, technical consultancy, and technical alliance management. In 1992, Eberhard began to work with DB2® for MVS™, focusing on testing and performance measurements of new DB2 versions. Since 1999, his focus has been on Information Management and DB2 UDB on distributed platforms. He is currently the Technical Enablement Architect for IBM Information Platform & Solutions, working with System Integrators throughout Europe. Eberhard holds a M.S. in Mathematics (Diplom- Mathematiker) from Hamburg University.

Ivan Milman is a Senior Technical Staff Member at IBM, focusing on security and governance in the Information Management area within the IBM Software Group in Austin, Texas. Over the course of his career, Ivan has worked on a variety of distributed systems and security technology, including OS/2® Networking, DCE, IBM Global Sign-On, and Tivoli® Access Manager. Ivan has also represented IBM to standards bodies, including The Open Group and IETF. Prior to his current position, Ivan was the lead architect for the IBM Tivoli Access Manager family of security products. Ivan is a member of the IBM Security Architecture Board and the IBM Data Governance Council. Ivan is a Certified Information Systems Security Professional and a Master Inventor at IBM, and has been granted 12 U.S. patents.

Martin Oberhofer joined IBM in the IBM Silicon Valley Labs in the United States as a developer for database technology. After returning to Germany, he joined the IBM Böblingen Lab, from which he still works as a Technical Consultant and member of the World-Wide IBM Software Group Master Data Management Center of Excellence. His areas of expertise include database technologies, Java™ software development, MDM architecture, and IT systems integration. His special focus area is integrating MDM systems into the operational IT landscape by synchronizing and distributing master data with SAP application systems. He provides architecture workshops to customers and system integrators. He holds a M.S. in Mathematics from the University of Constance, Germany.

Paul van Run has almost 10 years experience in MDM and 15 years in IT. At DWL, he was part of the R&D leadership team developing DWL Customer, one of the first dedicated CDI products on the market. After the acquisition of DWL by IBM in 2005, he became a Senior Technical Staff Member, and he is responsible for the architecture of the IBM Master Data Management products: MDM Server (formerly WebSphere® Customer Center) and WebSphere Product Center, both market leaders in their segments. Before coming to DWL, Paul worked as a software developer in the insurance industry for an ING Group subsidiary in Canada. Paul holds a M.S. in Information Science from the Technical University of Eindhoven, the Netherlands, and a M.S. in Computer Science from the University of Waterloo, Canada.

Dan Wolfson is an IBM Distinguished Engineer and the chief architect and CTO for the Information Platform and Solutions segment of the IBM Information Management Division of the IBM Software Group. He is responsible for architecture and technical leadership across the rapidly growing areas of Information Integration, Master Data Management, and Industry Models. Dan’s previous roles include CTO for Business Integration Software and chief architect for Information Integration Solutions.

Very Good - Insightful and clear

This is a high quality piece on a complex domain that contains strong architectural advice that should be readily applicable to most environments. I bought the Kindle version and it is annoying that on books like this they dont provide copies of the drawings you can reuse. But very good content, and clear callouts of things to be mindful of.

It is however not a cookbook or Dummies guide - you have to have a need to get this deep into MDM which not a huge number of folks do.

Well Done; Comprehensive; Important!

Insights abound throughout this excellent and important book. For those seriously considering the efficacy of a comprehensive Master Data Management program in a modern enterprise, I would recommend this work. The authors do an excellent job of describing where Master Data Management fits in within a Services Oriented Architecture. And they also provide excellent technical guidance relative to integration and implementation. A minor, though necessary, criticism is that the book has a decided "IBM flavor" to it. This should be no surprise, as the book is published by IBM Press; and all of the authors are IBM employees. Nonetheless, the book is well written, well organized, comprehensive, excellent, and important. It is, in short, well worth the time, money, and effort; and the book does belong on the bookshelf of those truly committed to excellence in Enterprise Master Data Architecture.

Still the best MDM text in year-2010 marketplace

The best text on enterprise master data management (MDM) in the marketplace today. Other reviewers have commented that this work is "the Bible" of MDM, and this reviewer agrees with this assessment at a deeper level than acknowledging its near-600 pages of content. In addition to providing an introduction to MDM, the authors walk the reader through architecting solutions and provide industry examples at a level of detail not found anywhere else. As a consultant, one aspect of this book that this reviewer especially appreciated is its true vendor neutrality. It is not until Appendix B that the authors mention commercial products in this space, and although this appendix might help readers understand what might be purchased as commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) software, it is quickly apparent that there has been a lot of movement over the last two years.

Admittedly, after reading this book for the first time, this reviewer understands why the authors recommend first reading chapter 1 ("Introducing Master Data Management") followed by chapter 3 ("MDM Reference Architecture") and chapter 9 ("MDM and Data Governance") in order to understand MDM, data governance, and how to implement MDM, but these chapters also contain long stretches of content sans diagrams that are often slowly drawn out, so reading chapters in order is recommended unless the reader is already knowledgeable about MDM and is looking for industry-specific examples, in which case chapter 6 ("PIM-MDM Solution Blueprints") and chapter 7 ("CDI-MDM Solution Blueprints") should be read, or the reader is looking to integrate MDM with other systems, in which case chapter 8 ("MDM Integration Blueprints") should be read, although chapter 8 has difficulty standing on its own and the reading of chapters 6 and 7 heavily relies on chapter 5 ("MDM Architecture Patterns").

The authors present well MDM and service-oriented architecture (SOA) theory and how MDM enables SOA, and this reviewer especially appreciated their presentation on patterns and industry examples. MDM architecture patterns are broken down into (1) "MDM Hub Patterns", (2) "Information Focused Application Integration", (3) "Process Focused Application Integration", and (4) "Enterprise Systems Deployment", which are further broken down into the following, respectively: (1) "Transaction Hub", "Coexistence Hub", and "Registry Hub", (2) "Initial Load" and "Information Synchronization", (3) "Transaction Interception", "Messaging", and "ESB", and (4) "MDM-DW Integration", "MDM-BI Analytical System Integration", "MDM-ERP Integration", and "MDM-CRM Integration".

The authors follow up their presentation on patterns by providing solution insight to New Product Introduction (NPI) for the consumer electronics industry, Global Data Synchronization (GDS) for the retail industry, and PIM-RFID for tracking and tracing product, as well as solutions to Master Patient Index (MPI) for the healthcare industry, Cross- and Up-Sell and Fraud and Theft for the banking and insurance industry, and Self-Service Website for the telecommunications industry. Along the way, the authors discuss business context, relevant business patterns, relationships between business patterns and architecture patterns, and provide dozens of diagrams that tie-in directly to the discussion, walking the reader through architecture components and the interactions between these components. Expect to spend some time reading through these examples. Well recommended text on MDM for a wide spectrum of reader needs from the high-level to the deep-dive, but be aware that data models, a critical aspect of MDM, are unfortunately not discussed.
