Myth of the Welfare Queen: A Pulitzer Prize-Winning Journalist's Portrait of Women on the Line, by David Zucchino

Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter David Zucchino spent a year sharing the lives of Odessa Williams and Cheri Honkala -- two "welfare mothers" in Philadelphia -- to gain an intimate look at their day-to-day existence. Odessa, supporting an extended family, exhibits almost superhuman strength and resolve. Cheri, a single mother, is a tireless advocate for the homeless. Zucchino beautifully portrays them as figures of profound courage and quiet perseverance, systematically shattering all misconceptions and stereotypes about these women and so many others like them.

Amazon.com Review
Welfare moms are "the most hated women in America," says Cheri Honkala, a dynamic activist from Philadelphia who is profiled in the engrossing Myth of the Welfare Queen. As the American mood toward welfare turned mean in the mid-1990s and politicians worked to radically change who got benefits and for how long, Honkala used her considerable talents in guerrilla theater to fight bureaucrats on behalf of a rising tide of dispossessed women and children. She keeps the TV news spotlight on the homeless with a host of inspired acts: a long-term tent city for displaced families, the takeover of a church, a grungy encampment next to the Liberty Bell. Nonetheless, folks dispute how helpful such confrontations are. Odessa Williams, a resourceful, resilient woman who supports four grandchildren and then doubles that number when new troubles strike, is the other sympathetic subject in this tough, humanizing portrait of women on welfare by Pulitzer Prize-winning newspaper editor David Zucchino.

From Library Journal
In North Philadelphia, Odessa Williams, a great-grandmother, picks through trash to furnish her home and clothe her grandchildren. She also goes fishing to provide extra food and charges people for rides to and from the welfare office and supermarket to supplement her meager income. Cheri Honkala and others set up tent cities, take over an abandoned church, and occupy vacant HUD buildings to seek shelter and protest the lack of affordable housing. Against the backdrop of the welfare reform act, which revoked the federal guarantee of welfare to low-income families with dependent children, Zucchino, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist with the Philadelphia Inquirer, documents the lives of these women and others over a six-month period. The result, a harrowing description of daily subsistence living with very little chance of change, is a powerful expose of the welfare myth. Highly recommended for all libraries.

From Booklist
Looking behind the "welfare queen" stereotype, Philadelphia Inquirer foreign editor Zucchino attempts to educate readers about the realities that this calumny masks. "From Independence Day 1995 to New Year's Day 1996, [Zucchino] followed the lives of several unmarried welfare mothers living in the ghetto of North Philadelphia." His book "is the story of survival by single mothers during the dying days of the American welfare state." Central to its narrative are Odessa Williams, 56, raising grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as neighbor kids left in the lurch by troubled parents; Cheri Honkalas, activist for the homeless at Philly's Tent City; and Ivory Jennings, a determined teenager with as little tolerance for many of her fellow welfare recipients as conservative Republican politicians. Vivid, powerful portraits of the women behind the stereotype. Mary Carroll

Unsentimental yet powerful narrative
By A Customer
David Zucchino has written an unsentimental yet powerful narrative describing life in the trenches of the welfare system. His recountal reminds us that we cannot disregard the urgency of poverty,as it affects all of us, regardless of our economic situation or our opinion of welfare recepients. Zucchino's attempt to deconstruct the myth of the welfare queen exposes many unsavory details about life below the poverty line ; trash-picking, sex for money, children left in charge of other children. This book requires that the reader step into the shoes of a desperately poor person, leaving behind moral judgments and uninformed opinions. The reader must also remember that Zucchino's intent is not to essentialize the lives of welfare recepients by focusing his record on a few women, but to highlight the insanity of the welfare system and its effects on disenfranchised individuals; the interminable red tape, the constant harrasment by bureaucrats, and the poor distribution of funds and materials. After reading this book, we should reexamine the ways in which we show our moral obligation to those who need help.

The Myth of the Welfare Queen enthralls reader
By Christine
The beauty of this book is the simplicity with which it is written. There are not technical terms to maneuver around. It takes a very candid look at a world many of us will never experience. It shows the very human characteristics of single mothers on welfare. The book never gets boring because it reads like a story. This is a non-fiction piece with all the compelling attributes of a fictional novel. This is not just a light rainy-day read either. It forces you to look into the lives of these women. Zucchino describes Odessa and Cheri's horrible necessicities like dumpster diving and prostitution so flippantly, it makes you want to scream, "But these women shouldn't be living like this!"

Unbiased Journalistic View That WIll Make You Think
By Jessica
This is not the book to read if you are trying to make up your mind about welfare issues or reinforce the ideas that you already have. It is an amazingly unjudgemental look at the lives of those on welfare in the inner city that will at times make you raving mad, whether at the people who refuse to work with the system for the sake of their children or at a system that fails those who give everything they have to take care of children they only want the best for, and sometimes have no direct responsibility for (grandchildren, children they have taken in). It puts real situations and struggles in the place of the abstract idea of public assistance. Within the pages you will meet kindhearted, incredibly nonbitter people, like Odessa, who you will admire and, at the same time, long to reach out to. Those who you would pity for their horrible circumstances if only you could not tell from reading about their lives that they are far too good of people to need or want pity. You will also meet people who you cannot feel sympathy for. People you will want to just slap for their irresponsibility and for not putting their children's needs before their own whims. This book shows just how complex the issue of welfare is, and that a set of laws or policies is not going help some people who are just stuck between a rock and a hard place. It will show you that there is no typical welfare recipients, even among those living in one neighborhood. Though some of the people are unbelievably good , and some horrible individuals, it will show the many greys in between. It is a portrait of those suffering for the nation's view of the "Welfare Queen." Those with huge hearts and horrible circumstances infinity entitled to whatever they need to do the job that we would not want to (raising troubled grandchildren amd great-grandchildren with meager means like Odessa, or being the self-appointed guardian of the homeless like Cheri). It is also a portrait of those who stubbornly refuse to help themselves, and fully live up to the idea of the irresponsible, neglectful mother who rather hang out with different men and continue to get pregnant than think of her own children. This is not a book that will make up your mind, but it is one that will give you an understanding of why this is such a hard issue to even begin to think of any sort of solution for.

The Prince of los Cocuyos: A Miami Childhood, by Richard Blanco

A poignant, hilarious, and inspiring memoir from the first Latino and openly gay inaugural poet, which explores his coming-of-age as the child of Cuban immigrants and his attempts to understand his place in America while grappling with his burgeoning artistic and sexual identities.

Richard Blanco’s childhood and adolescence were experienced between two imaginary worlds: his parents’ nostalgic world of 1950s Cuba and his imagined America, the country he saw on reruns of The Brady Bunch and Leave it to Beaver—an “exotic” life he yearned for as much as he yearned to see “la patria.”

Navigating these worlds eventually led Blanco to question his cultural identity through words; in turn, his vision as a writer—as an artist—prompted the courage to accept himself as a gay man. In this moving, contemplative memoir, the 2013 inaugural poet traces his poignant, often hilarious, and quintessentially American coming-of-age and the people who influenced him.

A prismatic and lyrical narrative rich with the colors, sounds, smells, and textures of Miami, Richard Blanco’s personal narrative is a resonant account of how he discovered his authentic self and ultimately, a deeper understanding of what it means to be American. His is a singular yet universal story that beautifully illuminates the experience of “becoming;” how we are shaped by experiences, memories, and our complex stories: the humor, love, yearning, and tenderness that define a life.

Review
“In this vibrant memoir, Obama-inaugural poet Richard Blanco tenderly, exhilaratingly chronicles his Miami childhood amid a colorful, if suffocating, family of Cuban exiles, as well as his quest to find his artistic voice and the courage to accept himself as a gay man.” (O, The Oprah Magazine)

“Richard Blanco takes us on a thought-provoking, often hilarious ride in ... his coming-of-age memoir. The Cuban and Spanish intellectual, who was the first Latino, openly gay man and immigrant to be commissioned a presidential inaugural poet, illustrates the story of his childhood in the 1970s.” (Latina Magazine)

“The Prince of Los Cocuyos had me laughing time and again with its warm, sweetly self-deprecating portrait of an immigrant family attempting to straddle Cuban traditions and American trends.” (Andrew Solomon, author of Far From the Tree)

“Thank you, Richard, for this. The Prince of los Cocuyos is revelation and homecoming.” (Sandra Cisneros, author of The House on Mango Street)

“I adored every minute spent with young ‘Riqui’ and his endearing extended family. And at the end-an ending so beautiful and throat-catching-I felt wonderfully drenched in love.” (Monica Wood, author of When We Were the Kennedys)

“[The Prince of los Cocuyos] includes portraits and scenes, intimately and lovingly rendered… Having honored our nation as a whole in verse, he honors it again, but this time as witness to the life and fortune of one exceptionally American family.” (Los Angeles Review of Books)

“... the anecdotes Blanco shares – such as trying to convince his grandmother to go shopping at the Winn-Dixie supermarket she so feared – are muy cubano and will give readers a sense of Cuban family spirit.: (TheGuardian.com)

“In Richard Blanco’s Miami, memories linger outside coffee windows and in Cuban grocery store aisles… In a series of loosely intertwined stories, Blanco describes a childhood marked by loss, humor and hints of an exotic land called America.” (Associated Press)

“A warm, emotionally intimate memoir.” (Kirkus Reviews)

“Blanco has a natural, unforced style that allows his characters’ vibrancy and humor to shine through.” (Publishers Weekly (Starred Review))

“A work that is incredibly poignant at one moment, yet hysterically funny with the turn of the page.” (Huffington Post)

“Filled with colorful characters, often poignant and sometimes melancholy, Blanco’s episodic memoir is a meditation on belonging, on self-acceptance, and on his family’s almost mystical connection to Cuba.” (Booklist)

“Blanco’s touching reminiscence has a deep emotional truth. . . . [An] alternately hilarious and moving new memoir.” (Bookpage)

“... this memoir is an exceptional introduction to the writer and his capabilities. The Prince of los Cocuyos embodies the best of his poetic style, in particular his eye for detail and ability to put the reader right in the place where he is.” (Orlando Weekly)

“[A] sensual new memoir… Blanco’s ear for poetry comes to light in the memoir’s full-bodied language and knack for description… [evoking] the flavors, fabrics and smells of rundown South Beach hotels, all-night pig roasts, disco-era Quinces debuts.” (Atlanta Journal-Constitution)

“Forged from truth and grace, Blanco has crafted a deeply compelling and moving memoir about place, self and family.” (Augusten Burroughs, author of This Is How and Running With Scissors)

“The Prince of Los Cocuyos is equal parts touching, heart-ache-inducing, and laugh-out-loud funny.” (The Daily Beast)

“Funny and poignant, Richard Blanco’s The Prince of Los Cocuyos follows the author and his Cuban-American family in Miami. The details of this very American, yet immigrant experience make all the difference.” (Los Angeles Campus Circle)

“Like many a great bildungsroman, The Prince of Los Cocuyos ... portrays a character who feels torn between several different worlds. . . . His search for identity, belonging, and home is one that any reader, regardless of sexual orientation or ancestry, is one that anyone can identify with.” (The Advocate)

“His eloquent and poetic writing has the ability to induce laughter, tears, and anger, sometimes on the same page… Highly recommended, Richard Blanco’s coming-of-age story is told with humor and humility and is a pleasure to read.” (Edge Media Network)

A Terrific Read
By Dan S.
"Made in Cuba, assembled in Spain, imported to the USA" is how Blanco describes his story in shorthand. So, you would expect his memoir to be filled with stories and reflections that are completely unique to him. And, he has done just that - in a brilliant, engaging and, at times, hilarious way. However, he's also written a story that speaks to anyone who has tried to find their place in the world and within their own family. His descriptions of family members are both vivid and yet somehow familiar, regardless of your ethnic heritage. Blanco's stories will have you unexpectedly thinking about your own family, as well as the tales and trials that make up your personal story. In my case, his abuelita and my nana could have been sisters - perhaps because of the DNA that is commonly found in tough, immigrant grandmothers. In his "For All of Us, One Day: An Inaugural Poet's Journey", Blanco provided a glimpse into his journey that left me wanting to experience more of the journey. "The Prince of los Cocuyos: A Miami Childhood" more than satisfies that craving.

A Truly Outstanding Memoir
By Eric Selby
It is impportant when you read this memoir that you read what Richard Blanco says at the beginning because what he does is define memoir which is not the same as an autobiography. In other words, this poet turned memoirist makes clear that he, at times, fictionalizes but only for the purpose of enhancing what he is writing about. You will, I think, be trapped within the first few pages when you meet his Cuban-born abuela (grandmother) who is a character you want staying in the pages, not living next door! I love how Mr. Blanco is able to reach back into his past, especially with this abuela, and find the kernels that make her an important component of his childhood including her homophobic rants and what, today, we would all recognize as child abuse. But she brought with her, as did the rest of his family, the ways of some Cubans. Because I live in South Beach and interact every day with Cubans, mostly those who were born here, of course, I especially liked this memoir because it is salted with information (and espanol as well) that I have experienced. Like his wonderful poetry, this is a wonderful memoir.

Intimate, Honest, and Wonderfully Told Stories.
By Brett Benner
Told with loads of warmth, and humor, Richard Blanco recounts growing up in Miami with his Cuban family, as he grapples with hisidentity as an American, a Cuban, and a gay man. As much as I enjoyed the first half of the book, it was the latter part that I found the most affecting and moving. But all of it reads as if your best friend is recounting fantastic rich stories from their childhood.

The Jesus I Never Knew, by Philip Yancey

“There is no writer in the evangelical world that I admire and appreciate more.” Billy Graham Philip Yancey helps reveal what two thousand years of history covered up What happens when a respected Christian journalist decides to put his preconceptions aside and take a long look at the Jesus described in the Gospels? How does the Jesus of the New Testament compare to the “new, rediscovered” Jesus—or even the Jesus we think we know so well? Philip Yancey offers a new and different perspective on the life of Christ and his work—his teachings, his miracles, his death and resurrection—and ultimately, who he was and why he came. From the manger in Bethlehem to the cross in Jerusalem, Yancey presents a complex character who generates questions as well as answers; a disturbing and exhilarating Jesus who wants to radically transform your life and stretch your faith. The Jesus I Never Knew uncovers a Jesus who is brilliant, creative, challenging, fearless, compassionate, unpredictable, and ultimately satisfying. “No one who meets Jesus ever stays the same,” says Yancey. “Jesus has rocked my own preconceptions and has made me ask hard questions about why those of us who bear his name don’t do a better job of following him.”

Amazon.com Review
An old adage says, "God created man in His own image and man has been returning the favor ever since." Philip Yancey realized that despite a lifetime attending Sunday school topped off by a Bible college education, he really had no idea who Jesus was. In fact, he found himself further and further removed from the person of Jesus, distracted instead by flannel-graph figures and intellectual inspection. He determined to use his journalistic talents to approach Jesus, in the context of time, within the framework of history.

In The Jesus I Never Knew, Yancey explores the life of Jesus, as he explains, "'from below,' to grasp as best I can what it must have been like to observe in person the extraordinary events unfolding in Galilee and Judea" as Jesus traveled and taught. Yancey examines three fundamental questions: who Jesus was, why he came, and what he left behind. Step by step, scene by scene, Yancey probes the culture into which Jesus was born and grew to adulthood; his character and mission; his teachings and miracles; his legacy--not just as history has told it, but as he himself intended it to be.

Yancey is not alone in his examination of the "real" Jesus. Publishing today is replete with writers committed to setting the story "straight, quot; joining countless others who, over the past 2,000 years, have determined to discover the truth about Jesus. But where others would deconstruct and discount, Yancey disarms and discloses. We become colleagues with him as he examines the accounts of the life of Jesus. And among the things that we discover is that Jesus himself leaves us few options: either he was who he said he was or he was nuts.

Philip Yancey was awarded the Gold Medallion Christian Book of the Year award for this book in 1996 by the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association. It's not the first, nor the last, award Yancey has won for his writing. But the writing is not necessarily the great gift of this book. Yancey allows the reader to discover, along with him, The Jesus I Never Knew. --Patricia Klein

From the Publisher
Andrew Lloyd Webber cast him as a rock-n-roll rebel in the musical Jesus Christ Superstar, many Christians see him as a handsome European-looking man, and social justice groups place him next to Ghandi in his defense of the downtrodden. But, says Philip Yancey, the real Jesus would have left most people scratching their heads along with the disciples and asking, "Who is this guy?"

This is exactly the question Yancey asks in his new book The Jesus I Never Knew. Yancey's search for the real Jesus collides with the calm, cool, collected, and "loving hippie" notions of Jesus he saw in modern American culture. Instead, he finds a Galilean Jew born into apparent scandal making the most daring of claims: that he is the Way, the Truth, and the Light.

The Jesus I Never Knew developed out of a class Yancey led at LaSalle Street Church in Chicago, but finding the real Jesus has been Yancey's passion since childhood.

Yancey saw Him as a cardboard cut-out in Sunday School and a "cosmic Christ" in Bible college. Today he sees a world that marks its calendar around Jesus' birth and uses His name to intensify a curse. (Wouldn't it be odd to center a calendar around Napoleon's birth or to scream "Thomas Jefferson" in a shocking situation?).

"And yet," says Yancey, "I am not writing a book about Jesus because he is a great man who changed history. I am not tempted to write about Julius Caesar or the Chinese emperor who built the great wall. I am drawn to Jesus, irresistibly, because he has positioned himself at the dividing point of life-my life."

The Jesus I Never Knew looks at who Jesus was, why he came, and what he left behind. More than historical speculation or doctrinal recitation, Yancey asks the questions out of a personal desire to truly know Jesus.

"The Jesus I Knew has to be the greatest book I've read on the subject." Mark O. Hatfield, U.S. Senator, Oregon

From the Author
Philip Yancey serves as editor at Large for Christianity Today magazine. His books The Jesus I Never Knew and What's So Amazing About Grace? were national best-sellers appearing on both the Publisher's Weekly and ECPA lists. Both books also won the Gold Medallion Book of the Year Award. Yancey has written eight Gold Medallion Award-winning books, including Where Is God When it Hurts? Disappointment with God, and The Gift of Pain. He co-edited The Student Bible, which also won a Gold Medallion Award. He and his wife live in Colorado

If you're going to read one book about Jesus, ...

If you're going to read one book about Jesus, make it the Bible. If you're going to read two, this is my suggestion for the second. A serious attempt to dig into the person of Jesus, both divine and historical, working from the Biblical stories up rather than from our current theology down, Yancey's book tackles everything from Jesus' Jewish roots to the Beatitudes ("lucky are the unlucky"), citing Christian fiction, Christian scholars, and secular historians, but always bringing it back to the Biblical foundation of Christianity. Well worth it for Christians wanting to deepen their relationship and understanding of Jesus, and I suspect helpful for outsiders looking for an interpretation whose only agenda is, "Who is this man, really?"

Inviting and Thought-Provoking
By christina
I read this book at a point when I was really struggling with my faith: believing it, living it, and owning it. Yancy's writing style, which invites questions, was a really safe place for me to go during that time. It allowed me to be honest about both my faith and my speculation. So the first thing I appreciate about the book is it's honest, straight-forward exploration of Jesus' life. Secondly, I just thought that Yancy brought up a ton of ideas/points that I had never thought of. I really enjoyed this book, and in many ways I feel that it saved my faith, because it helped me really grow and own my faith.
