challenging and very comprehensive

I purchased this book for ultrasound school at the Institute of Ultrasound Diagnostics which is the place at which Kathy Gill (the author of this book) teaches. This book has been absolutely wonderful. It is very comprehensive and thorough. This book is great for beginners and experienced sonographers. My father is ARDMS registered, a member of the SDMS, and he has 20 plus years experience in ultrasound. He has stated that this text exceeds Mosby's comprehensive Diagnostic Ultrasound text. I have to agree with him. This book has very valuable pictures and diagrams with very detailed captions. It also has self- assessment exercises at the end of each chapter and a very extensive glossary in the back. This book includes sample clinical data sheets and AIUM guidlines and standards. I highly reccommend this book and hope that this review is helpful and encourages more purchases. This text is definitely worth the money!

Simple defined GYN/OB Ultrasound book!

I am also a student at IUD. I am 7 months into the program. We are currently in the fetal anomalies section of this book. There are many fetal abnormalities that can happen. Kathy Gill explains in such a way that any new sonographer can understand. My favorite feature is the charts. All of the main parts are usually depicted in a list format. Also, at the end of each chapter, Kathy always gives out scan tips for beginners!

This book is very well written and easy to understand! I would recommended to everyone. It has good comprehensive questions after each chapter and plenty of images so you see the sonographic features.

As Stunning as the Lady Herself

"Gone With The Wind" is my all-time favorite movie, which I've seen probably a million times now. I "blame" Vivien Leigh for the movie's success and for being so strong in my heart. Besides being the most beautiful woman I've ever seen, Vivien's acting is so wonderful, you really believe she IS Scarlett O'Hara. At least, she always will be for me. BUT, little did anyone know Ms. Leigh's hidden secret -- her mental illness, which made her success all the more enthralling. Despite bouts of "craziness" and bouts of fear so great she hid in corners, Leigh became America's sweetheart. Her portrayal of Scarlett was one of a woman you love and hate. Folks note in the biography that after Vivien got over one of her "crazy" spells, she was so kind to everyone and quick to apologize that everyone just loved her and felt the need to protect her all the more. This book is wonderful in its portrayal of mental illness while describing the star's romantic life with star Laurence Olivier -- who later leaves her because he can't handle her mental instability. This was all before medication could have brought some dignity back to this diva's life. Author Edwards sure did her homework in describing a true lady who struggled to succeed while struggling for her life.

Obsolete now; a period piece

This book has been lionized as a labor of love, and I suppose it is-- a certain fondness approaching idolatry appears in every chapter. For all that, and despite a promising first chapter where we're introduced to Vivien as she meets David Selznick at the "burning of Atlanta" and he realizes he's found his Scarlett!-- this is a dull book.
but worse than that for anyone really interested in her life, it's a book missing very important facts. That's not Edwards' fault-- of all the people she acknowledges at the end of the book, Laurence Olivier, Viv's second husband and the man who was there as her manic-depressiveness began to take over, is not listed. Olivier did not speak much about Vivien until after he'd written his won two volumes of autobiography, in the 80s. (On Acting and its companion).
So, the notorious affair with Peter Finch, for example, is not described, or worse-- described as just a mild flirtation. Far too much is missing from the biography.
Alexander Walker's book VIVIEN, published after both Olivier and Leigh were dead, is a much better choice, and its style is also far more comprehensive. Walker spends less time speculating and more time grounding his ideas with citations and sources. There's also a book coming out in the spring of 2003 which promises to be complete.
In short, this must have been a very welcome book in 1977, 10 years after Viv's death, but it's obsolete now. I gave it two stars because in its time it did represent a great deal of labor and research, and the writing style works hard (unsuccessfully, for me) to keep the reader engaged. But for anyone who really needs to research her life and the lives of the many famous people in her life, it's missing too much.

About the Author
Roddy Doyle is an internationally bestselling writer. His first three novels—The Commitments, The Snapper, and the 1991 Booker Prize finalist The Van—are known as The Barrytown Trilogy. He is also the author of the novels Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha (1993 Booker Prize winner), The Woman Who Walked into Doors, and A Star Called Henry, and a non-fiction book about his parents, Rory & Ita. Doyle has also written for the stage and the screen: the plays Brownbread, War, Guess Who's Coming for the Dinner, and The Woman Who Walked Into Doors; the film adaptations of The Commitments )as co-writer), The Snapper, and The Van; When Brendan Met Trudy (an original screenplay); the four-part television series Family for the BBC; and the television play Hell for Leather. Laugh out loud!

I have not finished the stories, but the first story has me laughing out loud. I am listening to it on CD narrated with a wonderful brogue. I just hope I don't have an accident while laughing at the clever lines. The author is outside the story, but makes you feel you can read the minds of the characters. There is some profanity, but slipped in hilariously. I hope the rest of the stories match the first.

How to Wear the Green

If your idea of Ireland is misty green vistas and quaint farm folk, pastoral vistas and cutsey leprechauns, this collection tells you to fuget-about-it. Written by Man Booker Prize Winner Roddy Doyle (for Paddy Clark Ha Ha Ha, several of whose novels have become small films, the author salts his writing with working-class slang and tough characters who worm their way into your heart. This volume is an overlooked gem bursting with gritty, true-to-life situations. Each includes a reference to immigrants (hence, "deportees"), sometimes as a protagonist, sometimes as another character. The stories are a sampling of Doyle's style and concerns, which, although they can be humorous, always have a poignancy if not earth-shaking pain. If you've never read Doyle, taste these bites. If you have enjoyed Doyle previously, relax and swallow his world whole.

Brilliant book; DREADFUL audiobook decision

These stories are uniformly brilliant, witty, and sometimes downright hilarious. The Irish dialect might challenge Americans, but if you saw and enjoyed 'The Committments' you should be all right.

But what makes the audiobook completely unlistenable for me is that Hugh Lee, the narrator, reads EVERY WORD of the text. He uses easily a dozen easily-distinguished different male and female voices. But you get ridiculous sequences like:

"We'll have to meet him." She said.
"NO!" Said Larry.
"Yes, Larry." She said.

After a few minutes of needlessly being told who is speaking, I turned it off and went to find my printed copy.

Dwight Watson traces how the Houston Police Department reacted to social, political, and institutional change over a fifty-year period—and specifically, how it responded to and in turn influenced racial change.

Using police records as well as contemporary accounts, Watson astutely analyzes the escalating strains between the police and segments of the city’s black population in the 1967 police riot at Texas Southern University and the 1971 violence that became known as the Dowling Street Shoot-Out. The police reacted to these events and to daily challenges by hardening its resolve to impose its will on the minority community.

By 1977, the events surrounding the beating and drowning of Jose Campos Torres while in police custody prompted one writer to label the HPD the “meanest police in America.” This event encouraged Houston’s growing Mexican American community to unite with blacks in seeking to curb police autonomy and brutality.

Watson’s study demonstrates vividly how race complicated the internal impulses for change and gave way through time to external pressures—including the Civil Rights Movement, modernization, annexations, and court-ordered redistricting—for institutional changes within the department. His work illuminates not only the role of a southern police department in racial change but also the internal dynamics of change in an organization designed to protect the status quo.

About the Author
Dwight W. Watson is an assistant professor of history at Texas State University. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Houston. He has perviously worked as a correctional counselor, a prison grievance officer, a county probation officer, and state parole officer.

Yet, for some reason, it has not received its fair share of scholarly attention. This book is an attempt to remedy this situation, and includes the two known versions of the "Constitution," founded on many sources. This is followed by introductory chapters dealing with the Muslim and Jewish groups that participated in the document. Finally, there is a translation and a detailed commentary on the clauses.

In this book, the author argues that most of the Jewish tribes of Medina, including the large ones, did not participate in the "Constitution"; the main tribes had more rudimentary, non-belligerency treaties with Muhammad. In addition, the assumption that the "Constitution" declared each Jewish group as an umma or community rests on a faulty reading: In fact the participating Jews received a guarantee of security (amana).

Wonderful collection

This volume contains two versions of the so-called "Constitution of Medina," also known as the Medina Charter, as collected by Ibn Ishaq (an early historian of Muhammad) and Abu Abayd (whose "Book of Revenue" contains one of two accepted versions of the document, the other belonging to Fatḥ al-Din Ibn Sayyid al-Nās, an Egyptian historian). Each version is presented in Arabic with notes on margin inscriptions and variations, and the version by Ibn Ishaq contains an English translation.

The greater part of this book contains extensive historical notes on each "clause" of the document, as well as alternative English translations from multiple sources and insights on each clause from multiple historians.

This is wonderful resource for anyone working with the Constitution of Medina (I relied heavily on it while writing my term paper for a class on shariah and international law).
