Dull
By Amazon Customer
This books contains several Greek hero tales, which have been rewritten for Christian children. While the original stories are pretty interesting of themselves, the prose herein is flowery enough that it goes right past pretty and into tedious and dull.
Seriously. This book is so dull I tried to read it twice without even realizing it, and only made it about a third of the way each time. I hadn't realized it because there are actually TWO versions of this book available for free on the kindle! The second one is The Heroes, or Greek Fairy Tales for My Children
Both versions have a heavily patronizing and overtly Christian introduction and a small handful of linked endnotes. Neither one has illustrations. The main difference is that this version has no active table of contents.
The contents are:
Preface
Perseus
How Perseus and his mother came to Seriphos
How Perseus vowed a Rash Vow
How Perseus slew the Gorgon
How Perseus came to the Æthiops
The Argonauts
How the Centaur trained the Heroes on Pelion
How Jason lost his sandal in Anauros
How they built the ship `Argo' in Iolcos
How the Argonauts sailed to Colchis
How the Argonauts were driven into the Unknown Sea
What was the end of the Heroes
Theseus
How Theseus lifted the stone
How Theseus slew the devourers of men
How Theseus slew the minotaur
How Theseus fell by his pride

Greek stories with a Christian message
By GJW
There are just three stories in this work: those of Perseus (who slew the Gorgon); of the Argonauts (who sailed to find the Golden Fleece); and of Theseus (who slew the Minotaur).
Kingsley wrote these explicitly on the presumptions that his boy readers would probably "spend a great deal of time in reading Greek books", while girl readers live in a world on which the "old Greeks left their mark".
The three tales are told with an explicitly Christian flavour: they are told "for beauty, and wisdom, and truth". The final words of Kingsley's introduction tell the theme: "Do right and God will help you." He makes a good fist of presenting these Greek heroes with Christian virtues.
I noticed only one of the typos often found in ebook editions of works that have clearly been scanned and OCRd: at one point, "Persons" for "Perseus.
It is difficult to imagine putting this into the hands of many modern children - perhaps only those able to be patient with quaint mid-19th century English and the cultural and religious presuppositions. For the price, I enjoyed it for both the fragments of classical background, and insight into the author's era.

My opinion
By Aurora
I like the stories about Greek mythology and enjoy them. However I didn't enjoy the narrative version of this book. The author wrote well but I prefer my fables and myths to be relayed without narrative.
