I am taking a differential equations course where I use this book for homework problems. My professor has exclaimed his disappointment on numerous occasions with the text, and is adamant that previous editions were better structured and had fewer errors. I cannot vouch for this, but I do know that this edition only gives answers to even problems in the back of the book, while previous editions gave answers to all problems. I don't know why they would make the decision to take those answers out; having a point of reference is crucial.

I am a mathematics major, and I am actually quite fond of differential equations, but I'm just not into this book. If I have trouble in diff eq, I usually look to online resources, because trying to rely on the book for a deeper understanding just wasn't effective the numerous times I tried it, and I am pretty comfortable reading mathematics at this level. The mechanics and reasoning behind many processes is poorly explained and just generally unclear. There is very little attempt to give readers an intuitive, generalised understanding of the material, and rigour seems similarly lacking. It's a very algorithmic approach that fails to establish the basics in favour of establishing how to solve problems... and that's just missing the point of diff eq.

Teaching out of this textbook is a chore. The material is often presented poorly or downright incorrectly, with little thought given to rigor or even basic intuitive understanding. There are multiple typos (which is inexcusable given this is a third edition). The chapters and subsections are ordered illogically, with certain topics introduced prematurely and others delayed for no apparent reason. Hints are given for trivial problems and left out for tricky ones. In fact, the only positive thing I have to say about this book is that it weighs significantly less than most standard calculus texts, so teaching differential equations is less physically taxing.

This book is crap. Had to buy this for a college class, and paid for the Wiley-plus access as well. I would HIGHLY recommend purchasing a differential equations guide to accompany this book as it did a poor job of explaining examples. (I've seen many differential equations texts, and this one is far below average.)

Oh, also, the online access was so terrible that our instructor had to manually review our answers for problems because the software was so poorly written.

Honestly, someone enrolled in CS101 could have made a better program. It's insulting to ask students to use it.

In April of 1976 handsome Tony Gable comes to New Orleans for the reading of the will of his father’s deceased sister, Madeline Benedetti. At stake is a multi-million dollar estate in Devil’s Swamp in rural Hancock County, Mississippi, near the coastal town of Bay St. Louis. Attending the meeting are the Godfather from New York and mob bosses from several major cities. The Godfather asks the local mob boss, Juan Bartolli, if it would be alright for Tony to stay in the area and possibly be shown around Bartolli’s operation. Bartolli agrees and arranges for his associates to have Tony present when some of his operation’s illegal activities take place. One of those associates is the sheriff of Hancock County, Raymond Burdette, who drives Tony several miles south of New Orleans to view Bartolli’s estate, where some of the gang’s more serious problems are dealt with. During a meeting with Bartolli, Tony is told to try to befriend Hancock County Deputy Sheriff Mark Patterson, who has been responsible for recent drug shipment seizures that have cost the Bartolli gang over one million dollars. While attempting to get to know him, Tony meets Patterson’s girlfriend, the beautiful Karen Thompson, and three of her friends at the Baked Tomato, a local bar and nightclub near the waterfront in Bay St. Louis. He is gradually exposed to more of the organization’s shipping operations in the area, including the utilization of an off-shore drilling rig as a storage and transfer point and the use of pastureland as a landing zone. Tony is present when Bartolli and his gang have a shoot-out with a group that has stolen one of the gang’s shipments. Bartolli’s actions and plans cause Tony to question his association with the gang. Made aware of an upcoming attempt on someone’s life, he is forced to make a determination concerning courses of action that he might take. His decision leads to things happening that are totally unexpected.

Bad boy to good girl

Mindi does here what Mindi does best, portray the struggle of a reluctant male into a submissive (in this case Asian) school girl. What you won't get here, just so you know, is detailed transformation sequences. What you do get (which is my favorite) is the slow emotional and psychological struggle and eventually surrender from Mike into Michelle, complete with a roommate who is further along in "her" surrender and other temptations. The end result is a given, but the journey is highly enjoyable.

Cop killer gets his due

Mindi Flyth is a master of erotic transgender fiction and “Changed into an Asian Schoolgirl” is a wonderful and vivid example of her dark writings in this genre. Presenting a story that takes place a bit into the future, a cop killer on death row is offered a special deal by the criminal justice system. Given the option of execution or receiving freedom after undergoing a special medical experiment that will transform him into a female, our nasty protagonist opts for the later. It sounds crazy, he thinks, but with just three weeks from the gas chamber, anything is better than dying. Our racist criminal Mike soon becomes Michelle, now in the body of an 18 year-old Asian schoolgirl.

Change is not easy though and Mike fights his transformation every step of the way. Then, as his defenses begin to crumble, slowly and inexorably he comes to the realization that they must have brainwashed him to accept this. In addition to his body transformation, it begins to dawn on him they had done something to his mind so it actually felt good. But, there was still a little part of Mike left inside that had to fight it. That “Mike part” couldn't actually enjoy this awful thing they were doing to him, or could he?

I’ll leave it to the reader to learn what happened, but as the author asks somewhat rhetorically, “Wouldn’t being a happy girl be so much better than being an angry man, or a dead one?”

She Bop II is an encyclopedic work on the history of women in blues, country, folk, pop, rock, soul and world music. This 2nd edition updates the story until 2001 with major new interviews and an additional chapter on millennial trends like Girlpower, Alanis Morissette and Lilith Fair, soul singers like Erykah Badu and Lauren Hill, plus pop singers like Mariah Carey and Britney Spears.

In the Prologue the author tells of her own introduction to the music world in a girl group in Southampton, England in 1979. They were called The Catholic Girls. Following this, in the Introduction O'Brien details some key changes for women in music since the publication of the first edition of She Bop in 1995.

Based on more than 250 interviews conducted between 1984 and 2001 plus many secondary sources, She Bop is not a simple chronological history but rather an exploration of themes, trends and genres. It looks at how women have negotiated their place in the music industry, the importance of role models and even the internecine rivalry.

It examines the issues that have challenged women from the blues through 1940s swing to MTV at various stages in the development of pop, for example how they deal with stardom, how they negotiate everything from contracts to image, the genres in which women predominate and women on the business side: managers, executives, publicists, journalists, producers and A&R people. In addition, the author discusses women as consumers of music.

The book concludes with 15pp of Notes, a Selected Discography, Selected Bibliography, Index Of Names and Index Of Albums and Singles. There is one color plate with photographs of Madonna, Mary J Blige, Debbie Harry, Billie Holiday, Alanis Morissette, Lauren Hill, Janis Joplin, Britney Spears and Diana Ross, plus many black & white photographs throughout the text.

Because of its length, this is quite a daunting tome but it soon enough becomes an engaging read. There are some factual errors, probably because of sloppy editing (the 6-day War took place in 1967 not 1957) and a few other contradictions often on the same page. Also, O'Brien's feminist theorizing can become tiresome at times, but her knowledge and enthusiasm for the music ultimately make She Bop II a gripping read. It is also a superb reference work.

About the Author
Michael Oates of late was a professor of French at the University of Northern Iowa from 1967 to 2003. He received his Ph.D. in French from Georgetown University and was certified as an ACTFL Oral Proficiency Tester in French. In 1989, he won the ACTFL Nelson Brooks Award for Excellence in the Teaching of Culture. He is a Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Palmes Academiques.

Larbi Oukada, a native of Casablanca, Morocco, is the chair of the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures at Georgia College. Professor Oukada received a Ph.D. in linguistics from Louisiana State University. His research and publications have focused on French phonology, methods of teaching second languages, and the notion of curricular responsiveness. Professor Oukada coauthored with the late Mike Oates of Iowa a first-year French program entitled ENTRE AMIS, now in its sixth edition and adopted by over 350 colleges and universities. He is also the lead author of CONTROVERSES, now in its third edition.

Great book. I used it for my french 1 class. I'm not sure if I'll be needing this in french 2 but we'll see. WARNING! This book does not come with an access code. You'd have to buy it separately. Found out the hard way. But either way. You will save renting this book and buying the access code!

This is not a book to help you learn kinesiology. It is the history of how it came about. If you're in a kinesiology class and are actually learning movements, contractions, joints, muscles, etc. this book will NOT help you! Total waste of my money.

About the Author

Alex Brumbaugh worked in the addiction recovery field beginning in 1983. For ten years he was the Director of Project Recovery, the largest provider of drug and alcohol treatment services in Santa Barbara County. He was subsequently appointed Director of Project Development for the Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse in Santa Barbara, and more recently the Project Director of a Recovering Communities Support Grant from the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT).

His undergraduate education was in history and English, and his post-graduate studies included history, psychology, education, and addiction. He was formerly a teacher of American History and English in Monterey, California, and an Education Instructor for the University of California Extension in Santa Cruz. He was also an Associate Faculty Member in Human Services, Social Science, and Alcohol and other Drug Studies at Alan Hancock College in Santa Maria, California, and taught numerous workshops on addiction and recovery issues.

He worked as a private consultant to treatment programs, conducted more than 30 Certification trainings for the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association, and served on CSAT’s Consensus Panel on acupuncture and addiction. His publications include "Acupuncture: New Perspectives in Chemical Dependency Treatment" (Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment, V10 No1, pp 35-43), "Acupuncture as a Foundation for Treatment Services" (Addiction and Recovery, November/ December, 1993, pp 26-28), Transformation and Recovery: A Guide for the Design and Development of Acupuncture-Based Chemical Dependency Treatment Programs, and The Praxis of Recovery: A New Vision for Success in Addiction Treatment (2014) and "Conceptualizing Successful Long-Term Recovery from Substance Use and Addictive Disorders." (2012)

He also engaged with hundreds of private and public treatment programs throughout the United States as an education and treatment consultant for the Texas-based Recovery-Direct (FMS Productions), a producer and distributor of educational and treatment materials on substance abuse, mental health, and criminal behavior. In the final years of his life he was named Executive Director of Santa Barbara New House, the oldest and largest group of clean and sober living homes in Santa Barbara, California.

Excellent. Transparent. Covers well the Clinical practice of Auricular Acupuncture Protocol, of the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association. And even more importantly, it covers well the process and pitfalls of bringing the NADA Protocol into the various State and local treatment services that can best be enhanced by the Five Needle Protocol. Many useful examples are given, as models for reader to use in establishing new NADA 5NP Protocol practice sites.
