I am taking a differential equations course where I use this book for homework problems. My professor has exclaimed his disappointment on numerous occasions with the text, and is adamant that previous editions were better structured and had fewer errors. I cannot vouch for this, but I do know that this edition only gives answers to even problems in the back of the book, while previous editions gave answers to all problems. I don't know why they would make the decision to take those answers out; having a point of reference is crucial.

I am a mathematics major, and I am actually quite fond of differential equations, but I'm just not into this book. If I have trouble in diff eq, I usually look to online resources, because trying to rely on the book for a deeper understanding just wasn't effective the numerous times I tried it, and I am pretty comfortable reading mathematics at this level. The mechanics and reasoning behind many processes is poorly explained and just generally unclear. There is very little attempt to give readers an intuitive, generalised understanding of the material, and rigour seems similarly lacking. It's a very algorithmic approach that fails to establish the basics in favour of establishing how to solve problems... and that's just missing the point of diff eq.

Avoid if you can.

Teaching out of this textbook is a chore. The material is often presented poorly or downright incorrectly, with little thought given to rigor or even basic intuitive understanding. There are multiple typos (which is inexcusable given this is a third edition). The chapters and subsections are ordered illogically, with certain topics introduced prematurely and others delayed for no apparent reason. Hints are given for trivial problems and left out for tricky ones. In fact, the only positive thing I have to say about this book is that it weighs significantly less than most standard calculus texts, so teaching differential equations is less physically taxing.

Textbook is crap. Online access is a joke.

This book is crap. Had to buy this for a college class, and paid for the Wiley-plus access as well. I would HIGHLY recommend purchasing a differential equations guide to accompany this book as it did a poor job of explaining examples. (I've seen many differential equations texts, and this one is far below average.)

Oh, also, the online access was so terrible that our instructor had to manually review our answers for problems because the software was so poorly written.

Honestly, someone enrolled in CS101 could have made a better program. It's insulting to ask students to use it.
