About the Author

Anthony T. Holdener III currently builds GIS web applications utilizing Esri ArcGIS JavaScript API, Google Maps JavaScript API, and/or Bing Maps API. He has worked with the web in one form or another since 1997 when he helped open an Internet cafe in Fairview Heights, Illinois. A graduate of St. Louis University with a degree in Computer Science, Anthony has worked as a web architect, developer, manager, or adjunct teacher for almost fifteen years in the St. Louis area. He is also the author of “Ajax: The Definitive Guide” (O’Reilly). He resides in the village of Shiloh, Illinois, a suburb of St. Louis, Missouri, with his wife and twins.

Too many errors and no corrections on the Head First site.

This book is not for the person learning on their own, or not in a class. Yes, I agree, Head First presentation is humorous, easy to read, etc., but there are many errors in syntax and code in this book. One needs to set up a server on their computer to run the code. In chapter 1 it says there is info in the Appendix "i", "the top ten topics we didn't cover", but there are only five, and the missing five are not online. I thought the problems were with the server I set up, but other code ran fine. The problem was the code itself. I could fix the syntax and typo errors, but being the student, I am not able to correct the code. It took me two days to figure out the code was the problem. When I saw there were errors in the second chapter also, I quit, and went looking for a better text. Maybe it was rushed to press, and not type read, but after a year, you'd expect that at least the files one downloads for the lessons would have been corrected. Head First was Head Dropped on this one.

The best book on Ajax out there.

Yup this is my favorite book on Ajax. I love Head First books but this one far exceeded my expectations.

Let me tell you a little bit about myself. I am a Java programmer with little bit of experience in web technologies. Before reading this book I had used JavaScript libraries such as [...] So Ajax was not a totally brand new technology for me.

I bought this book because for upcoming project, I wanted a deeper understanding of Ajax. Also sometimes, while using Scriptaculous, debugging was not easy, because I didn't know what was really going on behind the scenes.

After reading this book, I have better understanding of Ajax. This doesn't mean I am Ajax expert now and ready to write my own library. I will stick with existing libraries. But I feel this book has given me enough basic concepts of Ajax (and also some general web design concepts) that I can use Ajax libraries without breaking anything unintentionally.

I don't think I will read another book on Ajax unless I am doing some custom Ajax coding.

More than just a book about AJAX

AJAX is almost the least of the skills you will learn or improve by reading this book. Yes, it covers the browser side of AJAX very well. But it also delves deeply into javascript, CSS, and the DOM, with many examples of the best way to write the code.

The server side, on the other hand, is left for the reader to download and browse through mostly on your own.

I like the lay out and format of the text

I like the lay out and format of the text, however the organization of the information is a bit jumbled in certain parts. I used the text as a reference as studying for the Radiology Core Exam and only a small fraction of the material was tested. If you're using this book for that purpose, they stressed to many numbers. The PET/CT section is light as well and the CT section lacks pertinent information. The questions and exams were helpful, but not reflective of the style of questions on the exam. This wouldn't be my first or second resource to study for the test.

Concise and to the point!

This book (kindle version) allowed me to very quickly review important concepts. It did help to have read Bushberg's Essential Physics of Imaging before. Huda's Review is sort of like the "Cliff Notes" of that core book.

Seriously twisted but I loved it!!!

This may be one of the most erotic stories I've ever read. I loved how the story started, and just when I thought I had a handle on the torture taking place, the story shifted...and then shifted again. And I loved it. I love reading erotic horror and this new author did not disappoint. I will definitely be checking out M.J. Ferguson's other stories and eagerly awaiting the sequel to Depravity. If you like Edward Lee and Matt Shaw, I highly recommend this one!

Dark, Twisted and Kinky, Oh My!

4.5 stars - Wow, this one threw me for a bit of a loop. This twisted little tale starts off with Master/Slave that seems to be a bit non/con, but we quickly find that isn’t the case.

This is being told in the voice of the Slave, so that helps to really get his perspective on what’s happening and his real feelings about things. Even though the actions and behavior of the Master seem pretty awful, the Slave ensures us that he actually loves everything his Master does. So, you think that’s pretty much what the story is about, until wham! there is a total twist that actually had my head spinning in an attempt at understanding what was really taking place. The feeling of mental unstableness which had been looming in the back of my mind just skyrocketed. But this isn’t even the half of it. No, there is another twist that left me cringing.

I won’t give it away, but once again, the Slave tells us a story about how he came to learn about Master’s other “kink.” Let me say that it takes quite a bit to make me squeamish, but I almost didn’t make it through this part. It is pretty gory and things are more than a little effed up.

Enough about the content. Ms. Ferguson’s first debut story packs quite the punch in very few pages. The writing is smooth and the images almost too clear. It felt as though I was watching the scenes play out, as opposed to reading them. If you love horror or kink, or kinky horror, this is a fabulous example. I am almost too afraid to see where this is going to go next, but even though I might need to read with my eyes covered at some points, like a fender bender on the highway, I doubt I’ll be able to pass it by without looking.

Wow...did not see that coming.

Wow...was not expecting that. With that said, however, I love books that challenge my imagination and I love books that are able to catch me off guard, and this one did...on every element. This is about a master and his slave and their kinks. At first, I was torn because the master does some pretty harsh things to his slave. Thankfully, the author tells the story thru the slave and you realize quickly that the slave loves everything his master subjects him too. AND...then...wow...I love the twist and actually kinda whooped at the author's creativity.
But, the author has another surprise in store and I will have to say that it not only took me off guard but also pushed the boundaries of my limits. I love my dark reads, I love learning new aspects of D/s relationships, and I love being pushed to my own limits and MJ Ferguson accomplished all of that in this very short read.
This is a dark story so be prepared if you decide to take the chance. I was reading the end with one eye open and one eye closed because I needed to see where the author was going, but a little afraid also. It's hard to say that I loved this story, considering the content, but I definitely loved the power play dynamic and I admire the author for going somewhere most would not.
There will be a book 2 coming out and I know I will read it because the author has poked my curiosity. The book is short but the author was able to cover a lot of territory and she definitely gets your attention in the first few sentences. The story is well-written​, and the plot is...well, you should just read for yourself. I'm pretty sure you will be surprised by what you find.

A pleasure to read

First point - Dave is a personal friend, but I have received nothing for writing this review.

Second point - You shouldn't read this novel if you haven't read the other novels in the series (although the short stories are good but optional).

And Final point - I have said this directly to the author, but he needs to give more description for the aliens; I found it a little difficult to remember who is who sometimes.

And now to the review.

This is the best novel in the series so far. It was engrossing, poignant and at times horrifying. It should the best and worst of humanity. The characters shined, even the new ones, and I found myself wanting more. This is a story of tragedy and triumph, of pain and resolve, of strength and love. And good old-fashioned Science Fiction.

Reminiscent of Battlestar Galactica, Star Gate Universe, Babylon 5 and Stephen R Donaldson's The Gap Cycle, this was a pleasure to read that ended too soon, leaving me begging for more.

This book is why I love to read.

Ashes of humanity was well written to the point that it was like reading a letter from a loved one. The torture of finding out that your family has been destroyed and everything you know has changed . I found my self lost in the words, and had to reread pages many times, over and over.
Mr Adams out did himself on this typed out piece of art, a must read in the series. It will leave you wanting more.

I felt like it was more than a bad day/time and in that situation I really expected that they would organize with a governing structure to start getting all the things done that would be required to survive and thrive. Tens of thousands of people cannot be left to fend for themselves, take a look at any of the refuges around the world. They camp side by side but no one takes over unless it is for a selfish reason.

Outstanding - lots of great new games for you to play

This is a brilliant book by Sid Sackson. It compiles the rules for a variety of games, with the common feature that all can be played with the materials that you already have at home. Some games use cards, others use a chess or checkers set. There are a lot of paper and pencil games which are great to play while travelling.
The games are a mixture of "forgotten" games, new games invented by friends of Sid, as well as lots of games invented by the author. Many of these games have subsequently been published in a boxed format by major companies, but this book gives you a chance to try them out at no cost.
There are simple games, solitaire games, serious strategy games, party games for 20 or more people, and everything in-between.
My favourites in the collection include a 2 player card game of pure skill ("Mate"), a card game that resembles Canasta but which is rather more fun ("Paks"), a scrabble-like pencil and paper game ("CrossWords"), and a game called Focus that is 2 or 4 player strategy game that weakly resembles a cross between checkers and Shogi.
If you love games, then you should have this book. If you don't, then buying this book just might change your mind!

A Must Read for all Game Players

Sid Sackson was probably the most prolific collector of board games in the United States (and probably the world). Sid loved games and he loved inventing games, too. With many published games to his credit (some of which made their first public appearance in this book), Sid Sackson (the designer of one of my favorite games of all time, "Acquire") is my personal game guru and I have made a point of acquiring any game or book with his name attached. This book is full of fun and very playable games discovered, re-discovered, and invented by Sid Sackson. Do your brain a favor and buy this book now!

This is a great book for those interested in 'creative time' with the kids while waiting for food to arrive at restaurants. Very well written.

I really found this book helpful and full of information. I used it for a class that I was taking called family violence and abuse. Wallace does an excellent job outlining indicators of child abuse and he also provides different catergories of abuse such as elder abuse and alternative life style abuse. I often find myself struggling to use books assigned to each class because sometimes they are just not useful. I have spent lots of money on class texts that I have not opened once. THIS WAS NOT THE CASE WITH THIS BOOK. IT WAS VERY USEFUL.

This book was for a Criminology class

This book was for a Criminology class where the emphasis was of course on family violence seen from legal, medical, and social perspectives; but not limited in any capacity it delves into ritualistic, gay, and lesbian abuse. This book unveiled for me what family secrets are swept underneath the rug. For example, in a family they will know of a child molester so everyone stays away from Uncle Lester instead of turning him in, yet many times the aunt was touched or penetrated by him but her mother didn't believe her until it was too late. It also is enlightening about sibling abuse which steams a lot from them being molested and/or raped so they'll in turn do the same to a sibling since they are hurting. This book was very insightful and my professor really referenced it well.
